Today the miles were lost...
Hey it warmed up to upper 20's today; so we figured to get the oak down, cut up and split. Well, the wind picked up in the 30 minutes it took to get there, switched direction by about 75 to 90 degrees, and what a wasted trip it was! The wind off of the 3 to 4 miles of ice made the eyes water, so we drove back and found a willow on the south shore of another lake to do. I actually took off a layerof clothing!
Of course, we used the ice to fell part of the tree; there simply wouldn't have been an easy way to do it in the summer.
I need to visit Hawaii sometime, Koa Man. As I sit here typing, my feet are cold, and it's only January! Seeing that Hawaii has the longest expected lifespan in the U.S. and I believe Wisconsin is right up there as well, making the switch should be a no brainer. Now, "...if I only had a brain!"
Another cold weather positive; crane job on lawn. We will be piecing apart a large red oak in an old cemetery on Friday. We would leave a huge landscaping nightmare if we weren't doing the job on frozen ground, so not all is lost...
Oh great; the furnace just kicked in again for the 20th time this hour - arrgghh. By this time next tyear the wood furnace will be up and running...
Take care, all. Oh, the oak will be done tomorrow (maybe!), and you have my heartfelt sympothies you tree people in da way up nort country. I have relatives near Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in Canada, and in International Falls, Minnesota. One winter a number of years ago I saw the temperature on the thermometer at -55*F. I decided to live a little further south!

P.S. Of course, when it is very cold, there is more than ample time to, well, do the horizontal bop!
