Hey guys. Was on the trails with the atv and like usual carry the chainsaw incase i see a blowdown or something.

This one about 8" or so dbh. Count was 105-110 growth rings. Been dead a while...no leaves.

Thanks.

Bark sure looks like cherry to me, wood not so much but if it was dead for a while then ID from wood will be difficult.
Hard wood and slow growing for sure.

Ironwood. The bark looks wrong for ironwood but around here thats about the only tree to get that old and be that small.

When I first looked at the bark I was thinking ash but when I saw the pic of the split I would say white oak. It has just been dead a while and the bark is a little beat up.

Close up of the grain looks porous like red oak.....but not red oak. Im thinking its white oak. Just we dont have a lot up here where as red oak is abundant.

I am leaning towards Ironwood that has sat for a little bit and the bark smoothed out a bit.

Your best bet is to go back to the area and look at the surrounding trees. If there is one Ironwood, there is likely plenty.

My guess is white oak based on bark and tight grain. Almost looks too nice and straight - should split good. I am used to bur oak not white, but very similar.
