Walnut, nothing else smells like it.
That should help ID it right there.I just split some Black Walnut by hand last weekend...I had forgotten how easy it was. Each log split with one hit, basically just from the weight of the maul and no added effort. Sib. Elm is another story.... Good luck splitting it by hand at all.
shot of the cut off limb says elm or locust and I going with Siberian elm. Twigs are not right for walnut or sassafras and OP would smell sassafrasI'm going with Siberian elm...
All the Locust I've cut was very yellow, however I tend to stay away from Black Locust and those 6" thorns so it may be different.
Need a good picture of a twig and a cross section of the pith to get a good id on it.
