I know this is some type of maple, but not sure if it is hard or soft. I have only burned norway maple but it's been a few years and I don't fully remember the bark characteristics, etc. If it is norway maple, great if not let me know. It was stringy when splitting as well. Sometimes it would split on the first whack with the X27, but mostly it took several whacks. Some of the larger pieces I had to noodle with the chainsaw. Thanks for looking!Maple1.JPG Maple2.JPG

Actually I thought the top one looked like a pignut hickory, but agree that the bottom one is a generic silver or soft maple of some type

I believe he has a hickory and a maple, two different barks. I would say a Norway maple and not sure on the hickory species but definitely sounds like it by the fun splitting.

Wow, I wasn't expecting hickory. I'd recognize the smell of hickory - it's very different from maple and I've had more hickory over the years than I've had maple. Everything is split already. Pretty sure its all maple but if there is hickory in there, even better! I'll get some more pics of splits. What you see is what I got while still in round or partial round form. Thanks for the input so far.

Was it hard to split and stringy? Did it cut like Maple or hardwood?

It was definitely stringy. I would compare the splitting experience to white oak. I did not do the cutting. It was done by a tree service. They cut everything and stacked it. I just came in and loaded my truck and trailer.

Alright how about you burn a piece and see if it smells like smoked meat that Hickory smell? Still say it looks like Maple. How does it cut like hardwood or soft I wonder if its hard Maple , Sugar Maple?

Silver is what my gut was telling me but having never burned it before I was not certain and figured I'd better bring it to the experts. Soft maple actually works better for me. It will fit perfectly into my stacks for shoulder season this time next year and what is left can be for shoulder season fall 2016. Thanks again for the input.

i do think it looks like some type of hickory with the dark heartwood. and some maple in there too. Clyde why don't you come to the PA GTG and bring some along?

Thanks for the invite farmer steve. There's another AS member close by that I've run saws with before. He is telling me I should go as well. That weekend is really tough. The next day is Mother's Day and the day of the GTG is my grandmother-in-law's 92nd birthday. I have to play by ear for now - believe me, I'd love to be able to make it.
