I believe he has a hickory and a maple, two different barks. I would say a Norway maple and not sure on the hickory species but definitely sounds like it by the fun splitting.
I have two or three different looking barks all from the same tree.
The bark from a younger branch can look totally different from and older one or from the main trunk. There can be a lot of bark variation from different spots on the tree. Furrows, colour and thickness can be different.
I still say Silver Maple which isn't a bad wood to burn. It's not as hard as some Maples(Sugar, Red), but dries and seasons fast.

As I mentioned before, silver was my gut and I also agree with those that have said the bark in some cases looks like norway or pignut. I e-mailed the guy I got it from and it was definitely all one tree. It was a case of being too close to the house. Tree service had it all stacked nice and neat for me and whoever bucked it was as consistent at 18" as I've ever seen. Now if this this rain and ice would stop here I'd get out to my wood shed and grab some pignut and compare the two and try to get some pics. If it is pignut, my nose let me down...

Try to snap a sliver and see if it is like rope and wont break Hickory is like that . Maple should snap. Hold a lighter to the sliver and burn it see if it smells like smoked meat. Post more pics with close up of grain.
