You should have posted this as a poll, I would have clicked "FIRE HIS A$$ ASAP".

Drinking at 6am is a problem bigger than any "boss" can fix. I'd tell him that you know what he did to the saw and instead of pressing charges you will just take it out of his check. Based on his history I'd try to end it on a decent note saying that you have really valued his dedication blah blah blah (don't break any more of my stuff).
Good luck
Greg

Rush Limbaugh has finally done something that I can respect. Your employee should follow Rush's lead. If Rush gets off without criminal charges he'll be lucky. If your employee is able to salvage what sounds like a career, he'll be lucky too.

Hi Wolf, if I were you I wouldn't trash him yet, I will elaborate latter. If he has garnered this much attention so far, there may be hope. The biggest loss in the world is the loss of human potential. Buddy wont do you in I dont think. Here's a credit to your skills if you handle it right, but let the chips fall as you see fit.

Rocky is offering some valuable insights. End it now, because he has to hit bottom and you don't need to be there for that. I've been through this with a long time friend/employee. Working for me stopped 15 years ago, we are still friends. He still drinks and hasn't bottomed. He is also a very talented man that will die broke, friggin shame really.

Thank again for your valued input. Its funny that he just called saying he has a tooth ache but will still try coming in. I think its a hung over excuse. I have been giving this a lot of thought this weekend, I went upstate to my cabin to get away and relax. I am going to begin to talk to him in a calm respectful manner and try to get him to admit what he did, and then find out if he is willing to get help. If he lies or does not agree on getting help he is definetly fired, if he appears to be under the influence, I will have my uncle come down and confirm that and he will be let go. It may come down to letting him go one way or the other. I dont think that he will sober up, Idont think he will admit to trashing the saw, and I think he will probaly have a major attitude if he is sober do to withdraul symptoms that I have seen in other people trying to stop substance abuse. By the way to answer another post I live in Yonkers NY to the person inquiring about that. I also do most of my work in Yonkers and the Bronx. Thank you again for all of your replies, they helped me out a lot. :)

in my post it may sound as if i have no sympathy for addicts... i do but unless u are in some way able to help them,, the best u can do is show them,, they are still responcible for their actions.
and yes ill admit,, i cant pass a tin cup without puttng somethin in. there but for the grace of god.whew heavy stuff .
but they are our brothers.

Tony, that's all well and fine, but business is business.

Most of my help and I were friends long before I hired them, but they also realize that I have a company to run, and will act accordingly. On my clock they are my friends, but also my EMPLOYEES, subject to the same rules as everyone else. To treat them any differently would be unfair to the others.

i think we agree on what u ought to do. . i was just sympathising with any addict.
funny the last thing they need is our sympathy. understanding what they are up against ,,now thats another story.
good luck with your help ,,im afraid he needs more than luck tho. later.

Well guys I tried my best to do the right thing. This is what happened; I arrived at my lot to find all four guys (including him)
on time and waiting my instructions. The employee that advised me of the problem asked me not to let the guy know that he was the one giving me the info (wich I respect) so as I agreed I kept that part a secret. Not to make things obvious, I called each guy over to my truck and spoke with him alone to make sure that no one acidently droped the saw and explained that there was a problem and I had to make sure that I had all the facts straight.
I told each of them that the superatandant of the building was the witness to the incedent and gave me a detailed description of the worker and told me what happened. When it was the guy who told me originally what hapened turn came up, I just showed the damage to my poor 066. Then the moment of truce came, and he was called over. I asked if he had damaged the saw. He denied it before I was done talking and started to walk away. I asked him to let me finish and explained that the superatendant
witnessed a employee meeting his description become angry and through the saw down the hill of rockledge causing damage to the saw and that this behavior was unexcaptablel and unprofessional. He immediatly acused the super of lying and once again denied he was responcible adding that the saw was bouncing around in the side box of my ariel lift truck. See next reply for cont.

At this point I told him this situation reminded me of my 044 two years ago (he broke that one right in front of me although that was from inproper cutting) and he also denied damaging that one as well. I explained that he did it right in front of me and that this is one reason why I can not take his word that he did not damage
the 066. I told him that he needs to get help with his problems and that if he simply admited to what he did that I would cover all expences for any help wether it be AA or pscyological or both if he would just admit to what he did. I told him he would still be paid while he was getting help; however the cost of the repairs would be coming out of these funds. I thanked him for letting me speak and asked if he needed time to think things over. He replied that he did not and told me to go FU** myself and proceeded to walk away. My other three guys all said they were sorry for what hapened and added that they respect me for how hard I tried to help the guy out. The most ufortunitable part is this was not the end. My climber was contacted by the guy this evening and was advised that the guy and his friends will be waiting for me in the morning to show me how much they appreciate him being fired. Now I will have to contact the police and get them involved. I will first call my uncle who is a LT. in YPD and advise him of what was said to see if he will come or I need to make a report.

Often times the right thing is the hardest to do. Sounds like you handled it professionally. I think from the reaction of your employee you should feel assured that you made a wise decision. You will have gained the trust and respect of your remaining employees.

Drunks and the Law

I've been following this thread with interest, having had my own experience with a hard core alcoholic.

Probably this drunken (ex?) employee (and his "friends") won't show up, but if he does and the law can nab him on something (driving under the influence?), that might be the best thing.

I say that from to my own experience with my aunt's drunken boyfriend who lived down the road from me. He was a real terror. A mixture of violent cursing threats and actual physical abuse contrasted with contrite never-do-it-again begging for forgiveness BS. He fooled me a few times, but it ALWAYS came back to violent abuse.

Finally when he attacked me for the 3rd time (aunt would come to me for help) and he roared off in his truck drunk and crazy, we called the sheriff who busted him for DWI. Then he went in front of the judge and ended up in jail. THAT finally straightened him out -- more or less. He didn't stop drinking totally but he cut out the violent crazy destructive stuff because he did NOT want to go back to jail.

I hope no one gets hurt in your case, but I also hope that this nut-bag gets help. If he doesn't, he'll just wreck the next guys 066 or maybe worse. If it takes the LAW to get him some help, so be it....

Sorry for my absence, we had a wind storm for two days now and we became very busy. He did show up the next day but not with friends and he also left the attitude at home. He was full of apologies and asking for his job back. I explained all the grief he had caused me, my family and my other workers. I told him that if he was going to get another chance, first he would have to seek help. He suposedly went to sign up for AA. I told him if he can sober up and stay sober till the spring we would consider taking him back. I wished him luck and asked that he did not come around my lot or home again until I contacted him first due to the fact that a police report was filed and he would only be getting himself into more trouble. There are a lot of trees down in Westchester County and a old customer who is one of these buy and sell anything he can find offered me a 084 in good condition with a 4' bar in exchange for taking $400. off his bill. I am going to go check it out tonight. I have been running the old trustee 394, but its got a lot of hours on it and needs some TLC, mainly a muffler.I am considering sending out the 066 to be repaired and maybe getting it ported and polished. Any sugestions?
:)

If you want the job to be done right, short turn around time at a reasonable price get in touch with Dan Henry AKA Dozerdan fron the site.

I have had several dealing with him, he's fair, honest and most of all he's from Pennsiltucky. The work he has done for me has been flawless.
