I didn't know whether to post this here with chainsaws or in the joke thread. I guess I need to change the way I buy bars and chain. The right way seems to be to look at the tree and then buy a bar and chain for that size.
This was a question posted to a rural forum. I'm still not sure if he's serious.

I need to buy a 36 inch bar and chain for my trusty old Stihl 031 for
basically a one job use (a 55 inch diameter Red Oak truck about 8 ft
high - maybe 2-3 hrs of use but I want it to work and the prices are
about the same at the web vendor - what are the
pros and cons here if they price is no an issue hardtop.cfm -? -thanks

I seem to recall a thread inquiring if a 044 magnum could effectively run a 36 inch bar. Most votes said no! 031????????

That reminds of the time I asked about a 48" bar hanging on the wall at the local Husky place. I asked who the heck was gonna use that, maybe one of the big land clearing companies. The answer was a harry homeowner who was gonna use it on his Alaskan Mill powered by a 365. Apparently they couldn't reason with the guy and ordered the bar and chain and took his money. :dizzy:

Turnkey, I've run into a few like that-Whack and Hack'em tree service or Harry Homeowner nibble of all the limbs leaving the big stump. The biggest stump I ever worked on was actually cut off for grinding by my father. He slabbed it off with an 056 and 20 inch bar- Not the ideal setup but it worked. A (name your favorite big saw) with a 36" bar wouldn't have reached the center on that 7 feet plus diameter stump either so without a longer than 36"bar (which I have never had need of other than that job) it was a slice and dice proposition anyway.
