I just read through this thread and all I have to say is wow. There is hope for youth today. All I see is these kids buried in media type stuff all day and its depressing. Digger you Marc you My oldest son just turned two. He watches me work on my saws and has seen me run them. I bought him a used e-bay craftsman saw already.

He puts it on the ground, says, "Watch this da da", one hand on the half wrap and the other pulls the cord, then he proceeds to cut up everything in the house. Best part is, when I gave it to him, he needed no instruction on what to do.

If I had known kids were going to be this much fun I would have had them a lot sooner.

At the rate your son is going, you may need to get him some chaps and climbing gear soon!!

If kids were not so expensive or I won the lottery, I would have 10 of em. My vocal chords would be shot but there would never be a dull moment.

You got a kid infected w/ CAD? thats not good. it took me long time to get over that and its starting to flare up again. I had withdrawls when i quit and started smoking

He's settled down a little bit at this point, but not much. We worked on a wooden sailboat tonight; nothing fancy. I let him do most of the decision making on design, material, etc, and really just helped with the power tool stuff. I can see in his mind he believes he can do about anything right now and I want to foster that idea by keeping him moving forward with more and more involved stuff. Not just hands-on, but decision making skills and so on. I didn't have a lot of that with my dad and I want it to be different with all my children.

I will tell him about your experience, or let him read it. He has enjoyed the thread quite a bit and has started to warm up to the idea of using the internet to his advantage. (It does more than games!?!?!?)

Judging from my personal experience, radio controlled cars are great for a kid to learn mechanics (I ended up with a 24 lbs car, 4ft long, Kawasaki engine, disk brakes...). You learn to deal with engines, gears ... Always tunning for more power, you start making your own parts and trying new stuff. Having crazy kid ideas, you also learn to deal with failures... One drawback, it's not a cheap hobby (although it's cheaper now than at the time). 20 years later, I still wish I could get back to it. Unfortunately, my "hobby money" now goes to chainsaws (got a 088 2 days ago, a poulan parts saw last week and need to get a new Iseki handle next week... CAD again...). Remember that CAD can be dangerous for the wallet...

You mentioned "crazy kid ideas". That's funny 'cause when we were working on that Homelite his mind was open to ALL possibilities. I get tunnel vision and tend to focus on only one thing. Having the kids around keeps me on my toes.

On top of that, his mom told me I should get him everything he needs to do basic work on a saw, sharpen chains, etc, and put it in a good sturdy tool box for him. Nothin' fancy, just screwdrivers, wrenches, files and such. I have almost enough stuff to make him a decent starter set. I think that will be a good Christmas gift!

His mom says a man needs to be handy...

WOW!! 35 lbs?!?!? He's gonna be grinnin' from ear to ear! There hasn't been a notice yet. Knowing our mailman he'll probably just bring it by and put it on the front porch. One of the great things about living here is that I know most everyone and we all try to help each other out. Our mailman is about like a neighbor, he'd stop to help out if he saw the wife and kids broke down on the side of the road or with about anything else. Good people and good place for the most part.

This site and the good folks on it continue to amaze me. It's great to get home from work and shrug off all of the crapola I have to deal with daily and spend some time with good people. It restores my faith in humanity and helps me remember there are still lots of good people out there. Sometimes I forget...

My wife stopped by last week to pick up some A/V buffers for me and told him Digger got it going. From the reaction she described I don't think he really understood it was Digger that did it as opposed to me. When I say he rebuilt the carb, I mean we went through it using the spec sheet from Walbro with the tools in HIS hands. I only checked stuff. As we went through it I explained what I knew, told him when I didn't have an answer and then we would look it up.

He cleaned that thing from top to bottom using a putty knife, toothbrush and Q tips. I wouldn't let him get into the solvent or carb cleaner 'cause I didn't want to take a chance on him getting hurt with that stuff. Honest to goodness, that saw runs because of the work HE did.

And yes, it felt GREAT to watch him do it!!

Sounds like my town! Ever heard of washougal, Wa. (waa-shoe-gull)? I bet not! Unless you are into moto cross! we hold the AMA nationals here in town. Its the biggest event we have by FAR!! (50,000+ people attend it) But for 360 days its just a little town in the foothills of the cascade mtns. And we have a kick-ass river to fish for salmon and steelhead in! Its a great place to live if you ask me!....and i alwase think im the best person to ask! HAPPY CUTTING, BIG MIKE

After that he found a ryobi of a customers that I haven't really wanted to deal with. He checked for spark, added fresh fuel & had it runnin in 15min. :msp_thumbup:

I haven't heard of it before, but I know a guy who probably has. He was big in racing dirt bikes 20 years ago. He broke too many bones and had to move on to less dangerous activities. He still talks about it sometimes.
