Dads wood shed was running a little lean. It needed about 6-8 cord to fill it up. So I traveled up to Spokane to help him out. I had just completed my first muffler mod on my beloved 046, and had arrived straight from Madsens with fresh loops of square ground chain for his Huskys and my Stihls. The 25yr old/brand new 041AVE had yet to be wrung out by me.
I had used a Shimpo handheld tach to set the high speed jet earlier that morning on the 046. And throughout the day I had been having idling and running problems which was sorted via correctly adjusting the low speed jet and idle set screw the next day. Hey, I'm a slow learner!
I was cutting along and suddenly the chain snapped to a halt and the saw stalled immediately. Both events were unrelated but the timing was ironic. The misadjusted idle speed adjustment was too low resulting in stalling.
My heart fell already knowing I'd burnt up a perfectly good saw and siezed the crank. I had just been emailing Dennis about tuning it for me the week before. I'd remembered him telling me to pull the mufffler to make sure I didn't lean it out with the muffler mod. So off the muffler comes, and the piston looks beautiful. Muffler goes back on, and I was still so disappointed, but then the silver lining shone through. I knew Dennis could set it right for me and give me back a saw with more power to boot. Chalk it up to the cost of higher education.
For some strange reason I decided to give the starter rope a pull and see if I could free the crank. So I give it a pull and SURPRISE!, the saw starts right up.
A moment later the realization of what had happened caused me to giggle hysterically. My dad even stopped running his saw to see what I was so giddy about.
The chain brake had enabled, and my paranoia of the combined elements of a muffler mod and tach job sent my emotions aloft. I should change my moniker to "stupidgurl".
So Dennis didn't have to save me after all, but with so many things in life, I sort of regret the other possibility didn't pan out. My saw isn't a 046G.
Maybe someday.
