I picked this one up off Ebay a few months ago and I finally managed to get it onto the work bench tonight. The stock 45mm open port top end was shot so I went on the search until I found a good used 45mm closed port 55EPA cylinder and then I lucked into a new oem closed port piston. Now I have what looks to be a bone stock Husqvarna 51 but this one is now packing a big punch with the closed port top end and a stock looking modded muffler.

Here is what I started with

Something I found interesting is the different locations of the piston ring alignment pin

The open port piston had it line up dead center of the intake port

The closed port piston is turned about 45 degrees towards the flywheel

Always use a new intake boot and impulse pipe on these series saws

The saw started with the choke and four pulls and seemed to rev well after it warmed up for a minute, hard to do any cutting at midnight. In the morning I will give it a tune, throw it to some wood and head off on the 117 mile drive to the GTG. Guess I will have to look into finding a chain brake handle at some point, the brake itself works fine.

Here is the compression after running it for a few minutes

Looks like a solid 155psi, maybe even a little closer to 160.

Nice work. Kind of burning the midnight oil aren't we;) GTGs can be a lot of work!

I guess if I had not waited until the last minute I would not be running around now. Still have to tune this saw and put the carb back on the Super EZ auto in the morning, I have not even loaded the Jeep up yet. Got to try and get some sleep cause I a busy morning and then a long drive.

They are fine little saws!

Heck, that chain is just now starting to cut good!!!

Mike

I will have to agree now that I put the saw to some wood, the chain looks like holy he## but still cuts fine.

That's a cool project! Thanks for posting that. I like those sleeper concepts.

I think it is pretty cool myself. I like it cause it looks like any other old worked 51, who would expect it is packing anything special. Unfortunately it is not much of a sleeper now that I have told everyone about it.

I had this saw out for its first real cutting job today and boy am I ever impressed. I laid into a big ole oak stump today, just to get it down a little, and it just flat out tore the stump up. I was worried that the 20" .325 was going to be to much but the saw has proved me wrong. I will get some pictures of the stump tomorrow, to dark to mess with it tonight.
