I've got a Stihl MS 310 here that I'll be building a 390 motor to put in it. I don't know why this series of saw interest me, but it's fun to see what I can make one do.

Here's a vid of it stock with the 310 59cc motor.

I'm gonna use a piston for a Stihl TS400. It's just a tad taller & has wider skirts (0.110" wider).
The squish with the stock piston was .031" and the TS400 piston had .023". I'll prolly weld a small popup on this to raise the comp a lil more.

Should help with the performance on this saw.

I have a few buddies that run these saws and I almost bought one myself before I knew them. I'm glad I went the route I did, but can't help but wonder what could be done w/ these.

Whats wrong w/ the Windstar?

I'll add the MS 310 #'s when I get the saw tore down. I think the upper transfers are gonna get raised several deg.

Actually I've been able to get quite abit out of this series of Stihl. I'm a husky fan myself, but also like to do stuff a lil outside the box.

That Windstar is full of motors & parts. 455 olds, 455 buick block, 454 chevy, and some SBC stuff.

I'll be watching this. . . I gotta do a buddies 310 soon, and I'll be using a Bailey's 039 kit. I like the TS 400 idea for sure.

One thing about these series saws, they have a buttload of velocity from almost no room around the crank. . . They do well opened up. :msp_thumbup:

Hurry up and finish this today Stump!

I've got to set this project aside till tonight. Got an ATV to work on outside & another local saw to repair. Gonna be a late night:msp_thumbsup:

I kinda thought there had to be some potential there, ~ 60cc's thats a good size saw, most likely detuned for a cheaper sale.
I like that little 170 that I have and I did a points converision on a couple of 028WB's last year, nice saws, not anything I'd buy new.
Eventhough the 3 Huskys I bought are the last new saws I'll ever buy.

They do make good storage sheds don't they!
I might have to take over the wife's van for my SBF/BBF/5.0 Mustang parts!
You got an ol' Olds or sumptin?

Very nice work you do stump. Glad to see you up and running again. Looking foward to the outcome of the saw build.

I went ahead & welded a popup on the piston. This thing has a big combustion chamber so I made the pop up 0.075'' tall.
Turned what I could of it on the lathe. The flat spot on the intake side I had to finish by hand.

Got the case all cleaned up & ready to put back together.

Now for the fun part, gutting the muffler.
100_1164.jpg

I only cut half of the baffle out. THis acts as a small head pipe. Does it do any good?? Not sure but it isn't gonna hurt.

I Made the slot in the front of the muffler bigger & modified the deflector to flow more. I also added a port to the clutch side.
