So i had to buy some odds and ends and decided to try a CBN grinding wheel. ( big thumbs up to Kyle at edge and engine, spot on service.) i got the package and i notice this thing is heavy...real heavy....wondering if the extra weight will stress the 511a motor or should i just "hand prop" it to get the weight moving before i start it?

I give my Tecomec an assist when starting with the CBN wheel. All of that metal in the wheel is one reason these wheels don't burn teeth as readily as vitrified wheels. All that metal is a much better heat sink than the vitrified wheels. I like the fact that I can get a consistent profile on the teeth since the shape of the CBN wheel is not constantly changing.

I have one on a 511ax and it has no problem spinning it.

IS the CBN whell the lessor expensive one? I'm in need of a new wheel for 3/8 and can't justify the $400 one.

Link to a vendor here for the one you are talking about:wink2:

I bought a .325 and 3/8" about a year ago. I have done about 100 chains on each and I can't tell any change in the way they sharpen. You can definitely take some metal off without heating the cutter.

I thought I was the only one that gave my grinder a prop-start!!

I've been running one on my 511a and I never give it a thought. Just start it and grind chain.

Mine has 8 or so large holes punched in the wheel and each one creates a gap in the edge of the wheel as well. I think it removes some of the weight and creates some cooling effect. And I think since the edge of the wheel is not in continuous contact with the chain, that helps cool the cutter too.

That said, it is possible to burn the cutter, it's just a lot less likely.

I'm considering ordering one for .325 pitch as well now that I have an MS261.

Neal, i think there is a few of us with some Champ and C65 cub time. Ya know pre electrical system stuff. Hehe.

Are you guys using the Forester brand wheel, linked above, or one of the more expensive (e.g. Dynasaw) wheels?

Thanks.

Philbert

Forrester here, just like the link above from MajorPayne. Ill send it down to ya if ya wanna do a comparison or just a write up. Maybe someone will send the dynasaw one to you well and we can do a head to head. I know you love this stuff.

I am interested to hear how these $100 wheels hold up. At half the price of the Dynasaw ones I want to find out if it is a 'heck-of-a-deal thing' or a 'you-get-what-you-pay-for' deal!

We have been selling these for a couple years now and have had 0 complaints with performance or durability. The only issues we've run into with the Forester wheels is an occasional one that's out of balance. You'll know right away because your whole bench will shake as soon as you turn the grinder on. If anyone happens to get one of these, do not use it but let us know and we will send a replacement.
