I was at a dealer picking up some bits and pieces last week and they had one of those limited edition stihl 1926 hatchets. Looked pretty nice and they threw it in at a good price so I picked it up. The factory edge was nothing special, but I took it home and put it on my Tormek water cooled grinder, then the strop and put a crazy sharp edge on it.... shaved some hairs off my arm.

So I was looking forward to giving that a run, got out to a job and just slammed it into some trees. Felt great and made an awesome sound! Then I thought I'd have a go at limbing with it. Had a go at a small limb, maybe 3". Chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop.

So anyhow, 6 hours later I was about half way through that 3" limb and put the axe away and buzzed the limb off in 1/16 of a second with my ported 346XP. Then I limbed and bucked the entire tree in 17 seconds without even raising a sweat. Chainsaws rule.

I read a statistic last year that said something like the average human being can only sustain a physical output of around 1/4~1/3 of a horsepower over any extended period of time. Add that up, and over an 8 hour day you can only put out 1-1.5 horsepower by the time you factor in walking around, fueling, lunch etc. No surprise then that a 7hp saw whoops the hell out of hand tools

Thought you were in a chinese restaurant!

Without seeing all of the aspects, that last bucking cut pic looks just retarded!

You might want to rethink that. I'm going to guess the bar is only just a little over half the log diameter, or at most 2/3. To buck successfully you have to reach *far* over the log, and cut up from under, keep cutting up from the far low side position and use the full bar length, then further up the log, up, over, then back down the far side. Now as the kerf starts closing instead of setting a wedge pull the bar out and bore back in a few times, the top kerf will close but you have bar room from your boring. Finish the cut and the bucked log rolls off down the hill. The only safe efficient way to make this cut, it's seamless.

Uhh... maybe I'm too forward thinking. I wonder where that log is going when the cut is finished. It appears to me that the far end is supported by the stump. From here it looks like when the cut is finished, the logger and the stub will be taking a ride down that draw?

Randy seeing all your great photos makes me wish I'd taken more myself :-( Did you have your own personal photographer following you round everywhere or what? You've got more good photos of yourself than any other member on AS. Most of my pics are just goof shots.

Re-read my post. He will be finishing that cut from the uphill side.
