The big old long bar saws are cool and stuff, but I'd rather run a ported 346xp!

That said, I've not seen any trees that large around here in the Ozarks... :D

Uhh... maybe I'm too forward thinking. I wonder where that log is going when the cut is finished. It appears to me that the far end is supported by the stump. From here it looks like when the cut is finished, the logger and the stub will be taking a ride down that draw?

You're not too forward thinking, hell, you're barely thinking at all. The guy laying across that log is a member here and I doubt seriously if you're even remotely qualified to question his methods.
He's a professional faller and he's worked some of the biggest timber on the steepest ground that exists.
That particular picture was taken in Alaska. If you want we can post some links of him cutting trees that would probably make you run away and hide.

Yes, please post some pics of the professional faller. Perhaps I can go into remission for a little while...

At the beginning of the video the man on the far left running the saw is Cody Thomas, the same guy that was draped over the log, bucking, in the photo that XSKIER found "retarded". XSKIER, on the best day he's ever had, wouldn't qualify to carry this guy's lunch box.

There are other YouTube videos of him but this one will give a good idea of skills and abilities.

GL, why would you say that to another member? i thought the same thing about what was going to happen after the cut.no i'm not a pro logger and haven't been lucky enough to saw big wood like some of you, but i have been sawing 40 years. i do respect all you pro's that handle saws like you do and i am always impressed with pics on AS whether it is a 10" oak or a 10' pine. have a good day.

...that last bucking cut pic looks just retarded!

I think calling the guy in the picture "retarded" was what triggered the harsh response.

Maybe next time he should ask for an explanation and perhaps learn something new. :D

How could any Joe Homeowner look at this pic and come to the conclusion they knew better than the one operating the saw; so much so, they could even call it retarded... Seriously, does this look like an amateur operation or this guy's first day on the job? o_O

40 years of stumps like the one in your avatar?

Without seeing all of the aspects, that last bucking cut pic looks just retarded!

Stay on flat ground skier. This kind of work is difficult and dangerous. Not for the weekend firewooder.

F&L needs to be password protected and this thread moved there. Randy can guard the gate.

Haha! You effin elle prissies get all riled up about a thread that starts off about a guy comparing the efficiency of a hatchet and chainsaw in 3" wood? Go saw a log!

That's a fair question and I'll give you a fair answer. I said what I did because it damn well needed saying.

I don't know what XSKIER does for a living but I'll bet that most of us, watching him work, wouldn't blindly criticize him if we didn't understand what he was doing. I'll also say that most of us wouldn't call his methods or techniques "retarded" unless we knew enough about whatever he was doing to have a level of expertise equal to his.

XSKIER ran his mouth, he got called out on it, and as far as I'm concerned that's the end of it.
