As far as what I'll be using it for goes it's mostly going to be felling 12"-24" dead trees and cutting firewood.

24" standing I would be looking in the 60cc range. I own an 026 its a great saw but for that size wood I would grab a bigger saw first. You won't care about the weight when you have the grunt behind it.

Sure...24" all day long...boom, boom, boom...bigger saw than 50cc.

But, 24" once in a while...the 026 works, and might come in at <$200. Of course, he can wait. About two months ago I bumped into a fully-functioning 262XP for 150 bucks.

Right now if you could up your limit a $100 an echo cs590 timberwolf would fit in at 59.8cc.still homeowner in a pro built saw.reliable as all get out and with simple modification can hang with the best.

Used of course.if thats what the negative was about.

What's the general consensus of the Echo Timberwolf? I read good reviews but the pros generally scoff at the idea of an Echo saw. My 355T is a sweet little rig but obviously not enough for what I'm talking about here.

The only thing the pro's stick to stihl or husky.I can personally say i have took my CS600 halfway to hell and back without muffler restrictions and a base gasket and it still starts 2nd pull with nearly 180lbs of compression.I have logged and i have grubbed and i have Stumped. In other words I have came I have sawed I have conquered.

I just got a Husky 340 on FleaBay for $80 shipped... I cleaned it up, ported (cleaned up) the exhaust port and muffler modded than tuned... she runs like a beast! (for a small saw)

FWIW

Thanks for the input! I do have a lead on one of these close to home and will follow up when I know more. I've heard quite a bit about these needing muffler modding and a tune. If I go this route I'll be looking for advice on that front.

Sure it does. But what fun would this be if I could just go slap down $700 on a new saw?
I'm sure most of you guys have been in my shoes.

Just wait for the right saw to come along if you're not in a rush. Check your local pawn shops... People sell power equipment all the time at the holidays to afford family Christmas.

The mere fact that you are open to all brands and taking advice puts you miles ahead of the guys that come in these threads and just want a husky or just want a stihl.

You can also keep your eyes out for Dolmar/Makita 520-540-115 or 120, 120super, 120SI, 116, 6000, 6800. These are all very well reguarded saws that will do the work you want and generally cost less due to their lesser known name. However they are a pro saw made by a german company older than Stihl.

Some good prices in your area on used saws. Something to be said for being able to talk to the seller and get input from others in one place vs feebay or craigslist. Find that users here are much more forthcoming about problems or issues. And you can get help to fix the problems too.
