Thanks again for the help. I got lucky, I think, and found an old spark plug wire and a muffler in a shop from a 036 that looked like it would fit. He sold me everything for 10 Euros. I put in the new spark plug wire, (Thank you Fish), and added some gas to the cylinder and it fired right up.

The muffler for the 036 had two screws that went into the case, but there were no such holes on the 028 AV, so I mounted it to the cylinder then was able to get the muffler cover secured on one of the two corners. After a good cleaning and some fresh gas, it seems to run great.

When I was running it without the bar and chain on, I noticed fluid coming out from around the sprocket. Is this from a bad seal?

Here are some photos of the saw and the muffler.

It is my neighbor's saw, so if you think I should do something about the fluid around the sprocket, or the muffler, please let me know.

Thanks,

Pete

That is a funky looking muffler, 036 you say? Seems small. Looks like you've got the fitment down, as long as the opening in the back of the muffler matches the exhaust port on the cylinder give it a go.

The oil coming out of the case near the sprocket is from the oiler I'm betting. Either have a leak in there or a bad seal on the oil pump.

Is your saw "electronic"? Don't think I've seen an AV w/points & "Quickstop".

Thanks adkranger. The saw seems to put out plenty of oil, but I'll look at the pump if I can. As for the electronics, I'm not sure. The spark plug wire screwed into the coil, but I did not look any further than that. I'm new to this, and have only rebuilt an old Dolmar CC, and made small fixes on other saws.

The oil leaking out around the sprocket may not be a huge deal. Remove the sprocket and plastic cover over the clutch. I'm guessing there is a small leak in a seal on the pump, or the gasket, it was stored with bar oil resevoir full and it slowly filled that cavity under the cover. Now when you run it the oil works it way out.

adkranger...

that makes sense about the storage. The oil tank was full and it had been stored for a long time. I'll look under the cover and see. Some of these guys are not great about maintenance, whether it is a tractor, chainsaw, or themselves. Great people, but lots of other things in their days trying to farm on the side of a hill.

Help in finding Muffler for 028av

Hi guys,
I was wondering if you could help.
I've got a Stihl 028av. I've been trying to find a replacement muffler for the past few months but all the ones that I have found are from the US, and no one seems to post to the UK. Does anyone know a UK supplier, or a US supplier that can send one to the UK?

Thanks
