Hi guys, just bought a very clean 026. Starts on the 3rd or 4th pull. Idles good but when I try and cut with it, it dies. Put in a new plug (old one looked good). Fuel tank filter looks like new. This is a low time saw and I've never worked on one before but I am good with a set of tools. What things should I check? Carb? Vents? Ignition? Gaskets (which ones)? HELP?! I don't have a service manual so I'm not sure what to check. Any online links to service manuals for the 026? Thanks in advance. Frank.

As you slowy rev it, how far can you get it to go?

Dose it seem like the "H" jet is not jeting?

MD-80's are too cool, I once had jump seat from Ankaorage - Sea-tac,,,yaw-dampener failed twice in flight, way cool ride!

I PM'ed you..

Your carb is getting filed with gas then either the delivery side to the carb or the carb metering diaphram can't keep up. I see 5 of these a day this time of year..

Five likely problems, all associated with fuel delivery or pumping.
- The Carb inlet screen is blocked.
- The impulse hose has a tear/hole
- the fuel hose has a hole
- the carb diaphragms need replacing.
- the crankcase seal under the flywheel is bad. This last one is less likely because you say it starts easily.

To look in the carb you need to remove it. Dead easy - undo the screw that holds the black top on the the read handle (underneath), then the two nuts from the crab and pull it out. Take the side off the carb that has the single big screw. There is a round screen in a hole about 5/16 in diameter. It should not be filled with junk...

The best way to determine the rest is with a simple presssure test.

Wide open throttle is strong for about 3-4 seconds then it dies or bogs down unless I jocky the throttle. I can keep it running but I can't cut with it. If it dies again, I can start on the third or fourth pull run WOT again for about 3-4 seconds then it bogs again or dies. What gives? Thanks. Frank.

Gas can't be delivered to the metering chamber fast enough.. Maybe you missed my post...

Too cool Lakeside53!

As always, you hit the nail on the head it seems!

At some point before the busy season, if I may, I would like to ask for a spare parts list ,,,,, of just the things I should stock for my own use as I like to go cutting for a few days at a time?

Thanks lakeside53. I'll check the aforementioned and let you know what I find. Thanks again for your help it is greatly appreciated. Frank.

md80drvr, if I can weigh in here. I believe I'm in the same boat as you here. I can pick up a set of tools and turn away at anything.... I like the challenge and satisfaction of "doing it myself" although most times I'm not very good at it. I wouldn't go out on a limb and actually tear a friends saw to pieces :) . But, I have an 028, and an 015 so I would imagine the 026 is probably similar (probably more to the 028), the best thing to do is give it a relatively "cheap" tuning. Get a carb. kit, impulse hose, fuel line and filter, plug. Lakeside about covered it all there. That should all be under $30, and you can figure out where it all goes fairly easy. I did put a diaphragm in the wrong order on the carb though so get a blowup of the car. Good Luck.

Found the carb inlet screen clogged. Cleaned, reassembled. Runs like Taz. Thanks to all. Especially Lakeside53. Frank.

No problem - find them every day like that - If guy would just change the fuel filter once a year, and don't store gas in their saw, I'd be just like the maytag repair guy...

Good One. Hey Lakeside, is it worth running a bit of the Carb. cleaner you buy from an auto store through a tank of fuel every once in a while ?

Nope... you don't know what it will do to the mix oil lubrication qualities and and in any case you don't need it. Just fresh gas, major brand (we recommend Chevron premium) and don't store it in the tank (or can) for more than 3 months max.
