My 026 PRO could have done it also. Most of the logs were less than 12" dia. However, it needed a break in the action, so I gave it a rest and ran the 028 Super. Rather amazing how well that the big brother responded and never missed a beat. I loved the extra grunt.

I've only owned a couple of 028s, an AV and a WB, both ran real good but I try to make a little money off my saws so I let them go. I've got my eye on a couple more fixer-uppers but so far the owner isn't parting with them. If it wasn't gonna rain this weekend I would go saw hunting but guess I'll have to wait another week or two..

I'm back home from a trip down memory lane (and family reunion), and tickled to see the positive, happy posts on this thread. I started it with an oil leak, but it's turning out to be all gushy with love for a wonderful saw. Cool beans.

Yeah, it's hard to find any posts with someone not liking the old 028.
Took another one of my 028 Supers out this morning and cut logs with it that ranged from 4" to 14" dia. It gave me a chance to tune the carb as I went along. I adjusted it to the point of perfection with good idling, acceleration and top end. I hadn't done that for awhile and the old girl really appreciated it. Much as I like my 026 PRO, it usually takes five pulls to start it (3 chokes and two fast idle). This gal started cold in three choke pulls and on the third, she calmly waited until I shifted to fast idle. How sweet it is!

Your story made me all warm a fuzzy! Guess after dinner I'm making a tall drink and heading out to the shed to make some process on several saws awaiting their reassembly. I didn't lightly pressure wash these guys with their covers off when they got here, got lazy! Now I got greasy sawdust just waiting to fall in! I was thinking of pressure washing them then trying to dry them with the backpack but don't know if all the little particals will wash out the bearings enough!!!! Augh!!! I'll never do this again! I was thinking of stuffing with a blue shop towel then blowing the dust off then just pulling the shop towels and hitting the area inside real quick with a map gas torch... Help burn off anything that's in there ??? I really Don't want a chunk a crap jamming in the gap or gettin behind my ring and buggering up my newly cleaned up saw, you know?

I had a dream the other afternoon about when I was hand sanding off that aluminum transfer in the beautiful oem cylinders... Man are they just impressive quality. !!! Got my four little 16 inch Sugi-hara roller tip bars...I think $20 bucks each was a real good deal... Gotta hit the button and get the Oregon semi chisel chain comming!!! It's time to get cuttin' with these girls!!! I know their in my top favorites without having even run up yet! And that little 44mm plug will pull that 67 driver .325 .50 gauge threw the avarage hardwoods around here just fine! And I don't care if they don't spin fifty thousand gigs watts like my 346xp did ... I didn't care for the sound of that saw and sold it...and started alternating threw the 6 350's I've got on the shelf. They all need to get out and streatch their legs a bit. And hell, the old 350 with the Hutzl bigbore kit and muffler modded with the 1/2 inch pipe port sounds an runs better ...or just as good and sounds better then any of the others!
I just can't wait to open the intake and exhaust on my extra 028 (44mm) jug and see how much more pull I get ... I might be able to grind on those rakes a bit and let her really chew!!!! Woo hooo! I usta always say "God Bless America!" Now I gotta try to figure out how to add, and "West Germany" where all these beautiful old Stihls were made!

Do need at least one beat 028 jug and the cylinder dia. Don't madder... I wanna make me a bed side lamp for my night table with the old Stihl jugs... I got the Husky covered! One on one side and one on the other.., old lady is gonna be so, so happy with my new interest in our interior designin' !!! Hey, a I always get stuck doin' all the actual building/makin/fixin' the stuff she wants... Like I care what it looks like! If the roof ain't leaking and the sheets and pillow cases are kinda clean... And I can find the remote!!? Then I'm in heaven! I screwed an old leather holster I found at a yard sale into her grandmomma's night stand for my remote holder and you'd have thought I killer her cat... Don't you know she made me take it off!!! I tell ya, women sure are a mystery??? LMFFAO!
I'm sure glad my firewood cutting neighbor wantened that 362cm or whatever that 50cc computer pro saw is... And said the saw shop wasn't gonna give him but $200 trade in on his one year old MS391... Heck, the last thing I needed was another saw but felt really bad for him because he's working real hard making his little firewood business go. So I said hell man if an extra fifty would help I'll give you $250 right now and you can go get that one you really want. One of the best (very few) real quick disisions I ever made! Here two ? Years later there's like 9 or 10 to keep it and all the huskys company! I'm a dang addict ....man! I just bought 4 poulan 2015's or something... They're like 45cc saws... With the parts and crap I'll have way to much cash into a $70 dollar saw... But the way I figure it these are my loner freet!!! You want to barrow a saw... No problem...here you go! And they run great... Bigger fuel line, carb adjust, muffler mod! They can bust those up all they want!!! Thanks Ya'll, this is a great group of folks!
I must admit that I enjoyed reading all of HuskyHeadDave's words. There is something about older chain saws that make you love them. They become part of you, kind of like an old pair of shoes that you hate to throw away. I know of no other stronger union that forms between a man and his equipment than the union between a chain saw owner and his saw, especially his favorite go to saw. Lending mine out makes me lose sleep.

Amen! You want one of those poulan 2050's or whatever with a good 18"? Bar a chain you let me know! Might need a piece of tygon and a carb blow out with 2+2 but they'll run. Give them that friggin thing!!! Just like my 1911, you'll pry my 028's from my cold dead hands ... These girls ain't for loanin' ... And I ain't rude and all so you can look at em' alright ... just don't go trying to get your paws all over um' ... These is look & Don't Touch category! Go fondel your own dang saws...know what I mean? (Laughing my ass off!).
I don't know if that bond is so solid because you're relaying on each other to work ... and If you're a wood burner that's not something taken lightly... You know you need those ten cords! It's a bond for darn sure! It could be half based on the fact that you develop an almost subcontious relationship in running a saw... You hear or feel something funny and you're reacting with the tool damn near as fast as it registers! You respect it ... Or, you'll loose a good piece and leak out a bit! Real men don't have a lot of things they're still aloud to do without being frowned upon. You can't say... "Hey women, I'm gonna go jump on a bull and make my 8 seconds and then chug a PBR with the boys!" ... She'll say ..."That's great hunny bunny, could you grab the trash and what do you think about meatloaf for dinner?" Well, we can take out that darn trash! And then detour to the grauge where we will file our brand new and perfectly good chain to perfection and cut a perfectly good hunk of firewood into paper thin disk! Twenty seven slivers of Red Oak or Ash and a milk crate of saw dust now covers that dang floor! It's our floor! And fresh cut wood smells good! For some reason I'm thirsty ... I need a beer!
Evening all! A question if I may about 'the slight oil leak out the bottom'? Is that how it should be? I've got same on a recently acquired first 028 (my first 'proper' saw really). Wasn't sure at first if it was because I was using thin oil (Stihl recommended) as opposed to the sticky stuff. Half on my way to looking for a fix then I came across this thread to suggest my problem might not be a problem at all? Hmmmm... Thanks in anticipation. Steve.
P. S. My seller said he bought the saw from new in 1995. The dealership brought that into question by pointing up the fact that the badge on the pull cord side was marked Made in West Germany; to suggest pre 1990 and pre East/West unification. Any 028 historians out there who might shed some light? Cheers.

Does the saw oil well? If so, I'd just go with it.
