Broken cylinder fins

461 for sale nearby. I'm thinking this might be an issue with heat dissipation or lack thereof.
Any opinions?

Opinions, well this issue has been hashed over and over on this site. It was claimed that the factory recommended no more than two fins be broken for a continuous use engine but many members with real world experience will say that those 3 broken fins in your pic will be no problem. Don`t bother welding any pieces back on the cylinder will cool well enough as is if the rest of the fins are kept fairly clean.

Do you or the seller know what caused the broken fins? I agree, the missing pieces should not be a problem but was anything else damaged when they were broken?

Dirt buildup on the broken edges of the fins. It's been run awhile in that condition and hasn't blown up yet.

Ask yourself which is worse- some fins broken off on a clean cylinder, or the between fin areas of a cylinder packed with oily sawdust and general filth?
On a secondhand saw you are very likely to find the latter- which certainly does not help to dissipate heat- but usually the saw is still running.

I would try to get the seller to knock the price down some. He should.
Would not matter to me because I would give out before it gets too hot anyway.

It was the worst I've ever seen too. That's how the saw came to me, 60 years worth of gunk. This is it now.
