Hi all,
I know there are always questions like this here, but.... I am asking this question for a friend. He has been using his 028 for his firewood saw for many years. It has slowly been losing power over time. It finally has quit running. I don't know exactly why. But, he is considering a new saw. He loved everything about this 028, and would like to get a new stihl to replace it. Is anyone running a comparable stihl that they absoluetly love that is still being manufactured. Because of back problems, he does not want a saw that is any heavier than an 028. Suggestions anyone.

MS290 or MS310. Unless he wants to shell out the bucks for an MS361.

The MS280 is a good little saw too. It is nothing like the 028 it replaced but is a great saw.

I'd say an MS260 or another 028 off ebay. I was lucky and got two that were like new, cheap and one was a Super. There are always many on there. I can understand why he would like another, they are a great saw, I really like mine. Make sure you ask a lot of questions of the seller so you don't get hosed.

There are plenty of 028 parts and saws on ebay like BIGBORE577 said, your friend really should consider a rebuild.

Love my 028 too... and rebuilding it would be my choice. But he said he wanted a new Stihl to replace the old 028.

BTW... what's he gonna do with that 028???

The 260 feels to me like a better balance version of the 028. I like the 028 better for full bar cuts cause it will just get down and pull with a 16 inch bar. The 260 requires a little more fines on larger cuts. But I would probably say that that is the way with any saw when you are used to another.

for 028 parts, ebay is the way to go, cause about 1/2 the parts are discontinued from stihl (and more every day it seems), so unless your local dealer has a lot of obsolete parts, you won't get much from them.

I dont think he can go wrong with a 026/ms260 pro. Its light, it should last forever, and makes good power for its size. That was my first saw, and I will never get rid of it.

MS260 would be a great replacement. Same power, a bit lighter, tried and true saw.
Does he want to sell the worn out 028? I have a basket case 028 I'm trying to put back together and am looking for a parts saw.

028s are my favorite Stihl model. Have bigger and smaller, some better at particular tasks but one of my 028s seem to be the first I pick up and use most often. I'd recommend rebuilding the 028 if he really likes it. If set on new, go for the 026/260. A little lighter w/similar power to the 028 and it's a pro saw. If he's looking for a new home for the 028 I can make room for another project.......

Is there any difference between the 260 and 260 pro other than decomp button and adjustable oiler.
