I finished rebuilding my 034 last night, buttoned up the shrouds about midnight. New piston, emery honed cylinder, all new hoses and filters, rim and sprocket, new carlton 20" bar and chain. Soaked the carb, cleaned everything and even buffed the plastic. I was jazzed all day at the prospect of starting it up tonight, all the while telling myself I'll be playing the "fuel or fire" game for a couple of hours. You can imagine my shock and amazement when she turned over, fired and ran on the second pull. Runs like a new saw. Tomorrow I'll fine tune the carb and off to cut some big oak next saturday. I can't tell you how gratifying the whole process has been.
Special thanks to Curt Bailey @ Bailey's Stihl Chainsaw Parts Plus for hooking me up with a second set of rings for the piston he sold me after I over-lubricated myself with miller lite and broke the first set installing the piston in the cylinder. (link to his store below). This was my first internal teardown on a saw and of course thanks to all the AS members who helped out when I got stuck. Now about that old 044 I was thinking about....
