I just purehased a 036 st a tag sale. I thiught it was a 311 at first, but it has older, 036 covers that I got to fit on.
They didn't have the choke linkaged in it, but I manages to jury rig one out of .062 wire.

Now the saw starts and runs, pretty strong. Idles well.
At high speeds it runs strong, then stumbles, then comes back.
I tried running it with the cap loose, to check the venting. No change.

What are some ideas of what could be going on now?

As I writh this I'm thinking of Fuel filter, Gas line problem, Ignition module gap.

Are there more things that this saw in famous for?

Bob

First thing is to check P/C through ex port, check muffler screen while you are in there. Compression test. Pres/Vac test.

All the rubber parts ~30 years old unless they've been replaced. Hoses, AV mounts, wire insulation, intake boot, seals, carb guts, filters. Clean it up to see what you have.

Should be able to find used parts, try trading post, some 034 stuff will fit.

Rebuild the carb, use a quality name brand kit. Replace the impulse hose and spark plug, only use oem stihl hose for the impulse because of the heat+ fuel vapors will cause anything else to fail at the worst time, any stihl dealer can sell you a short piece of this hose as they carry it in bulk. Replace the fuel pickup hose, fuel filter and rinse out both the fuel and oil tank thoroughly until very clean. As previously stated the saw is over 30 years old, the parts list with diagrams and repair manual can be obtained by requesting them in the "beg for manuals thread" found in the chainsaw repair stickies section. I love my 034/036 saws!

Thanks so much!
I never had a frankensaw before.

The piston looks brand new throught he exhaust port! The gas line is so short that the filter, which looks good, won't come out of the gas filler hole. Perhaps I'll just get an OEM carb for it. This will run like a $700 saw once it gets going.

It could still have trouble on the pulse line. I'll see what the pressure looks like on the 072XP pulse line first. It may not be able to pump enough gas at full throttle.
