The gauge is reading 80 psi so I figure even if the gauge is off by 20 psi were still only at 100 psi. The saw will start it didn't want to idle but I really didn't let it run much, just wanted to see if it would start. I ordered the meteor piston from weedeaterman with the 10% discount and free shipping. I will call the local dealer tomorrow and see how much the gasket kit with seals will be, I am going to replace the seals anyway as the dealer wants 45$ to do a vac/pres test so I might as well just spend the money and do the seals either way.

Any info on guys from the site that will clean and prep a cyl?

Weedeaterman also has a complete gasket kit with seals included.

Thanks madprofessor, I will give it a try and hope for the best lol.

I didn't find the gasket kit at weedeaterman but just called the dealer, I searched this site and found that part number 1125 007 1050 is the complete gasket kit, at first they said they couldn't find the complete gasket kit, then I gave them the part number and it came up but they said it does not include the seals, the kit was 20$ and I'm banking on what I learned on this site of dealers telling other guys that the seals were not included and when the part came in the seals were in there.

Ill be pulling the cyl off sometime this week and will try the acid on the cyl and hope it cleans up

If you pull that cylinder and find that it's not Mahle or Stihl, are you still going through with the clean-up? I picked up an 034 w/ a 036 After Market top end and wasn't impressed with the cylinder. It had no name and did not look like the Hyway or Tecomec cylinders I've seen recently. Although the piston looked much worse than yours, the cylinder had deep grooves that went through the Nikasil (or maybe chrome?). Mad Professor's acid description is dead-on, a little goes a long way and you can heat up the cylinder to increase the reaction rate. My fear would be wasting time on a junk cylinder, though.
Good call on the Meteor piston from weedeaterman, I just put one in an 034Super and it runs great! Also got the aforementioned gasket kit w/ seals. Good luck!

Looking at the first pic, that cylinder does have an AM look to it. Any way you can yank it off tonight and check for branding?

If you send the cylinder out for cleaning, pay shipping both ways and pay the person to clean it you may as well buy a decent am cylinder.

See if you can find a local AS friend who can appraise your jug and check your compression tester. Next best would be to clean the jug and post pics here.

Look for any deep scratches, pits or wear that could let the acid under the plating.

Check your ring end gap.

Have fun.

Ok so now you guys got me nervous that my original suspicion of the cyl being after marker might be correct. If that's the case would I be better off getting a meteor cyl or waiting around for a good stihl one? If the meteor are good and u guys can tell from the pics I may buy one while I can get the 10% and free shipping. I can't tear into it tonight until maybe later but see if you guys can tell anything from these pictures. Thanks!!

I'm gonna say that's an aftermarket jug, just guessing. If you look on the flywheel side down low, you might be able to see what it says. The top of that cylinder looks a lot different than this stihl 036 pro Mahle cylinder I'm holding in my hand.

Didn't mean to make you nervous, just wanted to let ya know that a low-quality AM cylinder probably isn't worth a clean-up. I'm with komatsuvarna, she has an AM look to her. I hope I'm wrong, tho. If it is AM, then maybe you could call Henry/Randy and get a new top end? Watsonr has previously said that Meteor P/C is best for 036, followed by Tecomec, then Hyway. I went with Hyway for my winter rebuild. You could also scrounge around for a used 036 cylinder. I'll stop by my local shop tomorrow and see if they have anything else in their barn. I do know they have a decent 036 Pro for sale, but that may have my name on it by Friday haha.

That's what I feared, the cyl is much cleaner than the rest of the saw and right away I had a feeling it might be AM.

If anyone does have a used 036 cyl that would be fantastic!

hummm. The porting-casting looks nice in that cylinder, and it says Stihl on it too. Does it say Mahle on the base anywhere, maybe under the saw dust below below the 8.

Hmmm.....! I'll let others chime in about the scoring, but you should be able to clean that up. That cylinder says "stihl" so...

I double checked the cyl and it doesn't say mahle anywhere on the cyl. Is that normal? Also the stihl stamp is a little crooked. If this cyl is OEM I will be very happy but what do you guys think?

When you said the porting do you mean like someone had ported the saw or just that the stock ports look ok?

My Mahle cylinder has a lot different markings than that one, but they doesn't mean yours couldn't be a later model 360 cylinder maybe, I dunno. Yours does have the 1125 marking which would be right for that series saw.

I've been wrong before, but I think they's a good possibility that cylinder will clean up with a little work...

The early jugs were made by Mahle for Stihl. My jug is actually a ms360 pro cylinder and it still says Mahle on the base. Later on sometime Stihl quit using Mahle I believe and made their own. None of the new cylinders say mahle.

Just the stock ports-castings look good. I edited my original for better clarification.
