What is the difference between the 038 Mag and the Mag 2? think there are a few ccs diif., but I am not sure. I have a Mag that is like new, and it has as much compression as the new 460 but no decomp. Has a different sound which is cool, but cuts a bit slower than the 044. Seems to top out at a lower rpm. Sound is cool though.

I'm pretty sure CCs are the same. I don't what the difference is.

Mag, MagII, 380 and 381 all are 72.2cc, but specs tell a story of increasing hp for the newer ones.....

If memory serves, the Mag was rated at 3.6kW, MagII and 380 at 3.8kW, and the MS381 is 3.9kW.

I'd love an 038Mag2 with a choke in the carb and an HD filter set.. Oh, 044 control lever...

Might just have to mod one..

Add a side chain adjuster and you would really have a great saw. :)
Back to the question I have both, the 038 is a fantastic firewood saw, the extra weight and balance make cutting logs easy, kind of heavy as a limbing saw. THe 038 has more low end than the 044 so you can lean on it and it will keep on cutting. The 044 is also great saw for all purpose cutting. Both of mine are set up with 20" bars.

I've run my 038 Super along with 440's and 044's. It's hard to explain but there's just something about 038's that says, "put me to work".

At the end of the day I doubt there will be much difference in productivity other then the fact that the 440 is a lighter saw. 038's weight within a lb. of a 660.

The 044/440 family also has superior filtration.
That's the only downfall on the 038 mag
if they had the filtration of the 440 and the 660 it would be a hard saw to beat in general

The o38 mag would be amazing saw all day workhorse if it was just possible to have the 660 or the o44 setup air filtration It would be unstoppable

Funny buddy figures out how it's possible to use the air filtration system of the 660 or the 040 for setup on the 038 Magnum please put pictures and detailed information on how you did it cuz I would love the copy it.
I love my 038 Magnum 72 cc's ported 24-in bar full skip chain large discharge clutch cover modded muffler.
Just a beast of a saw I wouldn't trade it for any other.

Love my 038mag first saw I would grab for ground work but my biggest thing that bugs me is the air filter.. of it was possible to get the ms660 hd air filter setup on it would be the best saw by far and would breath and possibly more torque then it started with with some carb adjustment.

Side by side, my 12mm 044 was faster than my 038 magll. If cutting in the woods I doubt you'd notice the difference unless running a 32" bar, where the 038 mag would show its strength. The 044 definitely has the weight advantage, and at the end of the day, that matters. Both are great saws, the 044 would be my personal preference.
