I've had this saw for 4-5yrs and just got around to tearing into it. I don't know anything about the history, but it's an 044 crankcase with a 12mm crank. The cylinder is a slant fin cylinder. I double checked with both a 12mm OEM and Meteor to make sure the ring ends weren't riding into a transfer or intake.
It looked to be in pretty good condition, the piston looked nice, and the rubber looked fine, so I decided to just get it going and then decide how to proceed. It would start but I couldn't get it to idle or run more than a few seconds. OK, time to tear it apart and replace the seals, rubber, delete the base gasket, and do a mm. Imagine my surprise when I pulled the cylinder to inspect it and saw this hole in the base. It looks like some sort of impulse passage, but the case also has an impulse barb. There was nothing in this hole and I couldn't see any passages through the partition for a hose. I checked several other 044 and 440 crankcases I have, and none have this passage. I also checked a 440 cylinder I have (with decomp) and it has the passage into the base of the cylinder but it does not come through the side of the base as the cylinder in question does.
Has anyone seen this before? What's missing?
