"help needed"

I have an almost new 046, that if left overnight w/ fuel will "magically pump" up to a half of a tank of fuel up through the carb leak out onto the rear handle and fill the cylinder to the extent that it won't turn over, sprays fuel from the decomp valve, and has to have the spark plug removed to "pour" the fuel out. the tank also seems to pressure up even if pressure is relieved before storage. temperature variation is minimal here. could barometric pressure changes cause this? I don't see how It could siphon as everything is above the fuel tank. I also have an ms 260 that sits right beside it with no problems. otherwise the saw runs excellent and is a real powerhouse. any and all comments are welcomed.

Sorry I don't have an answer for you. I've experinced saws flooding themselves over night, but not to the extent that you are describing? Half a tank of fuel?

Do you have kids that are playing with the saw? How many times has this happened? If it's happenned more than 2 or 3 times then I'd be surprised as to what the answer turns out to be to this.

Try this: Fill up the saw about half full and crack open the gas cap over night. (note the fuel level with something) If you come out the next morning and the level is the same you might have a bad breather valve on the tank.
My next best guess is.... yell load and Stihltech might come to the rescue.

Of course the breather is there to relieve vacuum in the tank...

I had a girlfriend in high school that used to do to me what it sounds like that cute little filly 260 is doing to the 046.  Have a talk with her.  Maybe she'll put out a little and the problem of the 046 backing up will go away.

Either that or start looking for other signs of a poltergeist.

Replace the carb needle.

May be just a speck of dirt, but while you have the carb apart,
replace the needle, If you buy the full rebuild kit, it will be in
there.

thanks for the info guys I'm thinking of setting the video camera up on the two of them all night to watch that young little filly 026.... I thought those two old 031's would keep an eye on them but maybe they like the show

046

Just repaired an 046 with this problem last week. The inlet lever in the carb was too high. Not enough spring pressure to hold the needle closed due to the lever height and the added weight of the diaphragm on it. Could not pull the saw over until the sparkplug was pulled. I put in a kit just because I wanted to be sure. Problem solved ( with a chainsaw).

Pop the top of the carb and see if the lever is flush with the top of the carb, or, if the lever sits down in, the two bosses immediatley next to the lever.

May not be your problem, but it sure is coincidental.

The vent only lets vacuum in, not pressure out. Causes problems in the spring when the temp goes up and we still have winter blend fuel around. Can build enough pressure to bypass the inlet needle, even if the lever, spring, and needle are in good shape.

Mr Crago is still right, if the vent doesn't leak a little, it will never work right. Bring back the simple hose and threaded insert. Cheap and reliable, easy to service.

NOW I sound old.

thanks for the tech info on the 046. I was starting to look in the carb direction and was going to try a rebuild as a "shotgun approach" On "another" topic of 031 ignition mods, my dealer
tells me that I can convert from points by using an electonic flywheel, factory behind the flywheel module, and my existing points coil. (the coils do look identical...) but others on this site say I must use a electronic coil?....so which is it? these coils sure are hard to find. And/or where can I purchase on of these "Atom" modules. The main reason for the swap is that I have had alot of problems with the points and condenser on this saw and they are "quite pricey" could the points/condenser problem come from weak magnets on the flywheel ?

"many thanks for the respected advise"

031

The Atom module is the way to go. Simply replace the points and condensrer with the module. Excellent track record.
I did the electronic switch on my 031. you need the flywheel and coil with a control box. Forget the one under the flywheel, too many bad ones. I used to use the orange atom module, if I can still find it.

thanks again for the advice. is "atom" a product/company name?
Does the "orange" mean somthing? where did you use to get these things nobody around here has a clue. thanks again

atom

Company nam, but it is getting harder to find. I am using some modules sold by rotary, stens, and a few other aftermarket distributors. Get the small one for chainsaws, seems to be working OK.

Atom Modules

E-bay Item # 2305807825, last time I e-mail him he could still get "orange", $18 shipping included.
