I'm trying to change the sprocket on my 051 but I can't get the clutch off. This seems stupid b/c I've removed a outboard clutch on my husky saw a couple times before. :bang: Anyway, I got the outer locking nut removed easily but the clutch won't slide out of the clutch drum. Is there something I'm missing? Shouldn't it just screw off once the outer locking nut is removed?

thanks

Yup but make sure you spin it to the right, not left. Also you may have to tap it a tad to get it going. I just replaced the sprocket on mine a few weeks back...

I'll give that a try. I just didn't want to screw up the clutch shoes by tapping it too hard. I thought maybe I was missing something.

another stupid question, but how would you tap it a bit? I was thinking screw driver and hammer? cause thats the only way I can think of.

You got it. Thats what I did, I took a punch and a hammer and tapped it lightly and off she came. Like you, I was easy on it...................

Don't use a screw driver... it has a tiny tip that put a huge stress on the clutch spider. Use a flat tipped punch, soft material like brass if possible.
You need to make sure the piston is stopped with say a 3/8 cord, and then be reasonable with how much force you use. I've seen these clutches take over 125 ft/lb of break-away torque to remove... years of running and overtightened in the first place. Put the saw on it's side and soak some penetrating oil into the shaft/clutch thread over night.

When you put it back on, borrow the right tool and a torque wrench... I had and 051 clutch come off and spin to pieces all up my driveway..

That sounds like a better idea than what I had in mind. I guess I'll try putting some penetrating oil on it first. I was kinda surprised b/c the clutch nut came off so easily, but the clutch doesn't want to move

I have a special tool made by brazing a three pronged gizmo (actally the orignal stihl tool) to an old socket. Then out comes the air wrench or real big breaker bar...
