.....tank vent. pulled the cap, removed the foam cone (which was very stuck, but I can blow through it), reassemble w/o the cone and... well, 9 minutes later it's still idling exactly where it was, instead of starting high and slowing until stall.

china carb with untouched screws did -exactly- the same thing as ozhoo's wj69.

idled for 19 minutes with no hicups, which is a new recent record. so new filter cone and top w/ hose ordered (top w/ hose because the old hose was toast and my improvised replacement was only so-so)

so final update: replaced the tank vent filter (cleaning the original in brake parts cleaner helped a lot, but went ahead and swapped it), tuned L and H, and the saw flat out rips with the wj69 now, better than it ever did before. Hanging on to that 90cc monster as it sliced up a downed hickory trunk today was fun, and still have a half dozen downed oak trunks to cut up, then a few 30+" oak trunks to drop.

thanks for everyone's help, and thanks for the wj69 swap @Ozhoo! appreciated!

tuning with a tach was nice, a bit easier than straight ear - tuning for max RPM (13k), then burying the bar and checking WOT for 4 stroking after pulling it out, and fattening it just a smidge until it did the right thing.
