It seems to me that a sharp chain will put more pressure on a saw than a dull one. Since it is cutting the wood and the other dull chain is just running on top of the wood. The worst thing I have seen with a dull chain is the excessive wood dust it produces. I have seen saws with dull chains, and take the air filter off and finding a block of dust on it. That may be were people are getting scoring from when running a dull chain. Especially if the filter is old and poor condition. This is my thought.

Why do you think this is true? I hear this a lot on AS.. Sure it can load up a saw, but that in itself won't score a piston. Heck, I mill with my saws, and they get entire tanks at full hp... (slightly detuned).

"slightly detuned" i also do some milling w/ a walkerized 066. could you elaborate on the slightly detuned part?
any comments appreciated

Well I asked the guy what he wanted to do and he said,

Hi Jack...Sounds like the saw needs to come back to me and be tore down...we can
do this 2 ways....u can ship it to me and I will refund your money ( you pay
shipping )or ship it to me i will repair it and ship it back to you....the 088
is tough to check for a air leak only because of the muffler system is hard to
seal...you cant pinch a rubber sheet in between the muffler and cylinder like on
a normal stihl saw.....i do appoligige for this inconvience to you...let me know
what you wish to do Don

My stihl dealer said he will take alook at it for 48 bucks, he will check for air leaks and find out what did the scoring......(plus maybe I can get him to tune it if I get an new piston) .

Is an 088 worth that kind of money.....here is some pics.

It's worth it. We get $1000+ easily for one in that condition (with no problems).

The air leak test is easy - you just need the correct adapter, or a rubber bicycle inner tube tied off at one end and a few turns of flexible wires as a clamp on the cylinder.

Have your dealer check it over - these are expensive to fix if you have major problems. Specifically ask him if it has a new piston (as advertised), and whether it's OEM or not.

Richen up your H end to about 11,000 - 11,250 (roughly) WOT with bar and chain. This will reduce the max HP available. The saw is not designed to run at full HP for an entire tank as is often the case with milling. Heat is the enemy. I also run 40:1 full synthetic mix while milling, and premium gas with no alcohol . Idle it for a while at the end of each pass and try not to run out of gas while milling - lean-out at max is not good.

OK, I guess I'm confused now. Was it ever decided that there is actually a problem with this saw or not? Either it runs right or it doesn't. Either it has a trashed piston or it doesn't. So which is it?

Trashed piston, but dont know y it happened. I guess I will take it to the stihl deal for a check over. But I guess I should still give him good feed back, cuz he was nice but......oh crap I dont know.

Stihl MS-290

Has anyone every had to deal with warranty repair of a Stihl saw at a dealership? What happened and how was the experience? Is it common for dealers to blame the customer for mechanical failure?

Why would you let the seller??/

Work on it.. He already claims he has new seals in it.. His expert mechanical abilities have already been disproven here.
So either get a refund or keep it and have it fixed by one of the masters here,
Lots of great stihl Mechanics here that will work for dollars, heck some even for beer I have heard.

I already said it.... ;) Get it checked out... and if all it needs is a new piston, that's less then the cost of the freight you will lose if you send it back (assuming you do it yourself).

Well, I hear by way of PM that it is on its way over to our friendly local Stihl dealer, the one frequented by reddog, caseyforrest, carvinmark, kleek, myself, and others. It'll be interesting to see how the saw checks out.
