Thanks

Thanks for the welcome and heads up guys!

Sounds like Gypo has the best price at around $1000 then, I did see he had a 088 on eBay 2 or 3 weeks back.

Since he's in Canada I wonder how the warranty would work?

US Stihl dealers typically will not honor warranties on saws originally sold in Canada. This is part of Stihl's policies on protecting their dealer network, the same policies that prohibit marketing new Stihl products online. Rob is mistaken, you will not find new Stihl saws at madsens or any other online dealer unless they are selling saws second-hand or in violation of Stihl policies. Stihl will cancel dealer status for online sales.
GypoJohn seems like a decent guy, but I am not aware of the origin of his saws.

I thought it was fishy to see such low prices on eBay, and I see that Madsen's will only sell to folks in their areas. Looks like eBay is a bit of an underground market!!!!

spreaderman- I was talking about Stihl saws, Madsen's has a disclaimer about only selling to folks in their area, (Stihl saws that is). I'm sure they sell everything else via phone/internet orders and will ship it too.

Madsen's will sell you a saw if you buy it in person over their counter, regardless of where you are from. Otherwise, they will not. They cited the same reason to me: Stihl would cancel their dealer status. And I would imagine they would not sell Stihl bars or chain through the mail for the same person. But looking at their website, they appear to be more than willing to sell Oregon products through the mail.

Yep, and if you're in person at their counter I suspect you're in their area. For me, it's not feasible to head to Washington just to buy a saw. Hey, they should open a Madsen's in California!

Welcome to Arboristsite ,if you are serious about chainsaws this is the place it great to find so many guys and a few gals that share the love of wood fiber and anything to do with it. It's great so much hard found knowledge given freely, and I am very thankful for that.As far as the 088's you might want to contact a fellow Californian,The Master Ken Dunn here is his email and might have a few left. If you want an 088 get it from Gypo or Ken. I bought mine from Gypo and he was way below US dealer prices. He is an honest guy and he'll stand by what he says. You won't get a warranty but professional saws will last much longer than the 90 warranty Stihl offers.

stihl 088's

Hello Mike,
They are fun with long bars also. out here on the west coast we cut 30-32 inch logs.in the modified class with 088's, 3120's 090's and 101 mac carts the top competitors are in the low 7 second times with uncle art's chain
xander, john lambert(gypo) is one fine person to deal with.
he's out on the west coast so he's hard to reach this week but he'll be back next week . try him then

Hello Ken
The 088 you built for me is unbelivable, truly a diamond in the ruff , we are faster everytime I cut.and already I have hit some very impresive times. Seth

So why are the prices so much better in Canada??? Is there something different about the Canada 088 saw vs the US model???

And FYI, yes, I did buy from Canada, but not from Gypo , I hadn't heard of him except for what he had on eBay.

Good saws at good prices, why can't US dealers offer this???

It's the exchange rate. The Canadian money isn't worth much any more, but earnings are too low for retailers to raise prices any more. They are selling for barely above their cost instead of a normal profit margin.

Yes, that's most likely!

Some US dealers will work with the customer on a satisfying price, my local dealer won't drop a dime below retail. He's too lazy to make the sale, he wants to have the sale come to him. I once told him I can get a saw for $200 less in the next county and he told me that I had better get going and buy before the other guy goes out of business. Six years down and the other guy is still there!

I never have made a large purchase locally!

Another reason I am being told is Canada has less import tariff on chainsaws than the US. If my dealer is being honest with me, Gypo sells saws delivered to your door cheaper than the US dealers can buy them.

Tax

Everything that is a rip off somehow ends up envolving a tax of some sort.

I didn't think that the US dealers wanted to make that much off of one saw, they seem to like to make about $100 off a sale, not $500. I would have rather purchased from a US dealer, but it just isn't worth it to pay an extra $300 (assuming I could get them down $200 on the price) for a warranty.

Thanks for the info treeclimber165 and xander9727!!!!. . .my favorite dealer has shown me some "net" prices, about ten years ago. Is this what they actually pay for the saws, or do they also get a profit from each sold like car dealers?
