I'm looking for information (if anyone has any) on a saw my buddy Pat Hoffa has. It's a 166 Sachs, looks like it's been built for many years, has a funky (homemade) pipe on it. He bought it from Gingras about four years ago, Jerry didn't have much info about it, except it wasn't nice enough looking for him to run, or quite fast enough. All I know is it runs like a raped ape in small wood.

I seem to recall reading that the 166 has the longest stroke, stock, of any chainsaw. I think in the same thread I read that the 090 has the largest bore of any stock chainsaw. So, some builders decided to couple the 166 chassis with an 090 top end to build a hot saw.

I could have this all wrong given the current status of my memory, but there is some value in the 166 as a base for a race saw.

Ugly saw

Well,if your old bud ,Pat,doesn't like this old ugly saw ,give me a pm.I have a knack for old ugly saws,maybe ,even a Sachs-Dolmar 166.:)

Pat's saw has the bottom of a 166 but the jug and piston are 3120. I could be wrong but I believe it has a stock piston. And then it has a monster Walbro Carb.

It seems that stihltech has the nack for getting picked to run against him for the three shows he did this year. But the 064 Frankenstien only has about 200 invested.....

Chris,

What's required to get the jug from a 3120 to fit on the chassis of a 166? I have access to spare parts from both types of saws, so this is a real eye opener for me.

Thanks.

I don't know if they line up but if they don't I know a guy that machined them to fit. One Sachs that is owned by a guy out in CT (bought from a NY competitor). He put an Old Gingras pipe on it. It does not run like Pats does. I think with some tweeking the one that Pat runs could be real fast. But like with anything in this sport. If there is a will there is a way you just need to add money.

Chris

will post some pictures of the saw on Mon or Tues. Maybe someone who was involved with building it will notice. We know what it has and how it runs, but are looking for a little history.

- Hey Stihlman, How about I run Stiihltech with my 394, a couple of homemade screamers going at it.

P.S.- The 394's for sale

Sachs dolmar 166

What kind of history? It started out in Germany as a Sachs-dolmar 166,I think. 7.2 cu in ,2.20 bore,1.89 stroke.Listed as 12 hp,sae[I doubt if it is that high}27.3 lbs,with a 21" bar[Mikes site}

I do see a problem with that.... I know Stihltech has gotten fast to the wood with the cold start but you are still faster on a consistait basis. And as you know the start is very inportaint. But maybe after I tinker with the saw a bit more we can get it to run through the wood faster.

Chris
