Woodie is right up to a point... The only thing that I disagree with is leaving a 4' stump to try to grub out with a tractor when its easier to push the whole tree over. Once you have the tree starting to go the weight of the tree acts as a big lever to "pop out" the root ball. You will still have some roots that you will have to break after the tree is on the ground but the hard part is done. Just take your saw and lop off the root ball push the tree out of the way and start working on the last few roots with the tractor.
