I finally got to start work on my neighbor's cherry tree today, bucking it into 2 10' logs and some great firewood from the branches Unfortunately, it has some rot, but I think we are going to be able to get some decent boards out of it. Wish me luck. I'll post some picts after we mill it.

I just have to jump in on this one. I sure don't intend to hijack this thread.

This was about 30 years ago, and I was out with an older distant relative cutting firewood for the camp sauna in a cutover area. We were scrounging around cutting tops. Well, i sent "charlie" out to find another place where we could cut while I sawed up the stuff that was available.

He came back and said that there was a big pile of Cherry logs that were left, and he figured that they were forgotten.

There was a pile of maybe 16 logs. They were definitely saw logs. We couldn't haul them to be sawn for lumber as we both would have loved to do, as we had no way to load them.

So I cut them into sauna wood blocks and we hauled 6 pickup loads from that pile.

They split like a dream,, and we had sauna wood for many years, but I still regret that they were not sawed into lumber. They made great heat though!

More rot than I wanted

Well, we got several nice slabs quite a few boards with minor or moderate defects. It was worth the effort to mill it, but not a "home run." Unfortunately, I forgot the camera.:dizzy:

from my limited experience i've noticed that black cherry is prone to having rot in the center. always kind of a bummer...well at least you got some nice slabs.
