I ran my new to me 261 a bit yesterday and was impressed with the snap, its eagerness to rev and the overall balance of the saw. Every saw I have has a MM on it so I’m pretty familiar with louder saws/how they have this habit of stinging the ears if you’re dumb enough to leave out hearing protection. The sonic disturbance the 261 produced was not that of a saw with an extremely restrictive muffler at all. It was glorious and full.

So today I took the muffler off and was quite surprised.

If this is what ppl are calling/have been calling the things I’ve read IDK what color the sky is.

See for yourself. What am I missing here??!

I do believe that is a 262 muffler. The 261 is an EPA saw and had a more restricted muffler. I'd say someone swapped it out at some point.
The 262 never used the muffler that had the louvered opening in the front. I would guess it might be an aftermarket muffler. Can you show a pic of the top of the muffler where the part number would be stamped?

Then I reckon there’s no need for a mm then? I can’t picture a 262 muffler being any more free flowing than that.

My SN isn’t the same amount of numbers you posted.

Thats the thing with mufflers- undo a couple of bolts and you can update/upgrade to a newer style if you wish- or fit whatever you like if you build a saw from the parts bin.
What @Cantdog said above is "on new saws leaving the factory- this muffler was fitted from serial number........."
Now your saw, probably left the factory with a different style of muffler, maybe it rotted out, got damaged or the owner just didnt like it, so went into his dealer and ordered a new one.

still room to open that up and keep it looking relatively stock.

Sure it is….. both 11 digit numbers. Yours is a 1998 model year. The cut off number I posted was a 1999 model year. That said it appears your muffler could appear on either side of the cut off point depending if it were an EPA saw or not. Also the number I posted was the latest/last muffler design and was supplied as the factory replacement for all 261s until the end of production. They are all NLA now.

This saw has very little use. I mean extremely low use so there’s no way that happened.

Cool, so you know the history of the saw?
Ive had saws in the shop ruined on their very first outing by brand new owners without a clue- but I am not saying what did happen with your saw, as I do not have a crystal ball- just explaining what could have happened and how your serial number did not line up with the information provided by @Cantdog.
I believe he has explained it now in more layman's terms.

Yep. The guy seemed pretty clueless but he knew about the saw.

I would also think a muffler would require a decent amount of saw use to ruin. You know, not like straight gassing a saw.
