Let me first start off this comparison by conceding to my distinguished friend from Norway, that there is a weight difference between these two saws. (cause I new you would point it out!!)

So, for the purposes of this discussion, we are only concerned with the power output of the 2 saws in question.

So, has anyone actually run both of the models in question, and how do they compare?

I tend to think that anything in the 362/365/372 and 2163/2165/2171 family is as good as we are likely to see. But the 262XP seems to be something special among many members.

So boys, what do you think?

Right, consider it done, but I will not say more about it (in this tread, mind you).........;)

I had a 262 and it was a great saw. Very light and nimble for a 62cc saw. Ran it mostly with an 18" bar and it balanced nicely and cut great. Never ran a 362 but used to have a 365 and currently have a 372. The 365 runs at 1000 rpms lower than any of these other saws but put a 24" bar on it and the 262 and I guarantee the 365 will pull away in a big piece of wood (regardless of what the specs say). I think the 362-365-372 are closer to each other in performance than most people think. They are definately bigger and heavier than the 262 was.

So cold up there I guess hell did freeze over!!!:hmm3grin2orange:

At one time I rember a domed piston being offerd for the 262xp. Anyone know where one can be gotten. I want to up the hp on a 261 and have fun doing it.
Thanks

I have a 262 and it simply rocks. It is one mean saw. Bought it in the late 90s and haven’t had an issue with it. Only 2 screws that became loose which I fixed with loctite. I think it would beat both the 357xp and MS361 in comparison. I have read somewhere that the 262 should have 01 hp more power than the 362 and less weight. Less weight for sure but the power advantage I can’t confirm. Haven’t run a 362.
Big bar mount adds weight to the 362 but it also easier to find bars and sprockets (3/8 that is) for the big mount at some dealers. Look for later series of the 262 with decomp valve.

You have to do more than just change the piston, ask Spike, he has done it......:D

Hello Brent, nice to see you posting! :rockn::rockn:

That may of course be true, but according to the dyno test results reported on this independent web-site, the 262xp should be the winner in both small and large wood, with both the highest and widest "powerband"...........:biggrinbounce2:

But as usual, the numbers may not tell the complete story........

The piston is only part of the riddle here. I spoke to another dealer a couple of weeks ago and he clued me in about a few things. There were 2 primary differences between the 262XP and the 261. One is of course the dished piston on the 261, which I knew about. The other, that I hadn't known, is that the 261 came out with a VERY restrictive muffler. After the first year, they changed the front plate by adding an extra small exhaust port in the front. This offered some improvement, but was still far short of the actual 262XP muffler.

There is something like 6 mufflers involved here if you count the EU or "tube" style that is NLA in the US. There were 2 versions of the better 262 muffler that were used. The earlier one had the removable exhaust deflector on the side. In '94 this was changed to a welded on deflector.

I agree with this, they are very close, but I have no idea how to explain it. I think that in wood up to about 18", it would be hard to tell them apart. I think that this is often the case with saws in the same family.

Obviously, you have to look at more than just CC's. This just happens to be such a good overall design, and since all 3 saws share most of the same parts, they all perform very well.

So, just a piston from a 262 is what I need for the piston change? I am planing on a muffler mod any how. The saw is low on compression so Just instead of rering I thought a upgrade was inorder. The tag shows its a 2001 model. Its a good runner with alot of torque even though its weak on the psi.
Thanks

That's it. Part number is 503531171. It includes ring, bearing and clips. List is $84.14

MAdsaw was referring to a domed piston for a 262.

you had talked about a dished piston in the 261.

Does husky make a domed piston for the 262 ?
