hey all,

new here and from Australia.

would like to know what i can do to get more power/performance out of my 266xp???

i'm not affaid to give anything a go. this is more a learing experience than anything...

the saw is in good working order. have replaced many small parts through out as the saw was bought in BC from ritchy bros and seemed to have a hard life.

when i rebuilt it i honed the cylinder and cleaned up the ports to match the carby.

i have offen thought about a small power pipe like on motor bikes but have no idea about the design of these.

cheers, serg

The 266 is a good saw that responds well to a variety of mods. Do some searches here on modifying saws/modified saws and you'll see lots of ideas, tips, tricks, and suggestions.

Lots can be done.

A muffler mod is a good start.

You could find a 272XP jug and piston and make it a 71cc saw, its 67cc's now.

If you want to go crazy with it, mill the head, raise and widen the exhaust port, widen the transfers and intake. Tons can be done to this saw, if this is your first saw mod then I would suggest try one thing at a time in moderation, and read all you can first. Have fun.

Building an expansion pipe is a science all its own, and most of the formulas you will find are meant for bikes and will not help much. If you want to learn its a trial and error process, if you just want a pipe there are quite a few members here that build them.

Hate to correct you, but the 272xp is 72.2cc, unlike the 371 and 372xp, that are 70.7cc.......

You know that for sure, probably a misprint......

* A muffler mod is a good start.

do you mean to mod the stock muffler or to make a pipe

* You could find a 272XP jug and piston and make it a 71cc saw, its 67cc's now.

as in a new cylinder and piston? are there part no's available for this?

* If you want to go crazy with it, mill the head, raise and widen the exhaust port, widen the transfers and intake.

what does milling the head achive? higher compression?
i can understand raising/widening the exhaust ports
what are the transfers?

by enlarging the ports, is this just more fuel/air in and exhaust out or is there more to it?

ok so the pipes on bikes are tuned. so what characteristics are bike pipes tuned to and why would this differ for a saw? i know they are doing different jobs but if it delivers good power and toqure, which both need where's the the differences?

i think i will start by playing with the porting then head and pipe and if i stuff the cyl/piston i can upgrade to the 272xp parts

thanks for all the replys now to do some more searching

cheers, serg

i take it that the 272 jug is a bigger bore and i use the 266 conrod???

is this a straight bolt in option, ie does all the original other stuff but straight up, carb, exhaust etc???????

cheers, serg

It should be, but there could also be different carb boots involved - the best way to find out is probably to study the IPLs that are on Huskys web-sites.

The time your saw was made could possilly make a differense also (?)

Here is a Workshop manual, that cover the 272xp.

When you use the 272 jug ,the difference is at carb intake mainly. The carb, air filter, carb studs, idle bolt position, needles adj rubber grommet are different, but easily adaptable on your 266.Looks harder on paper than real. Its an easy swap if you have all parts.Oh,you will need the top cover too because the 272 air filter wont fit(space) under the 266 cover.
