OK,talked to Stihl today, 270/280 is magnesium, NOT plastic. The cylinder is sililiar to the 250, but bolts to a bottom that includes the whole bottom of the saw. One side bolts on for the starter assembly to bolt to. They call it a modular design. With a little luck we will see it (the 270) Jan or Feb.

Well, I got my parts fiche on the saw today. I am not sure what I think about it yet. Cylinder similar to 025, but, bottom of motor is the whole bottom of saw, no cap on motor.Yes, plastic( OK, polymer). 270 and 280 are same saw with larger dispalcement on the 280. Want one to run.
When I was at the plant, I asked about magnesium casting. They said it was dropped because plastic took off so fast. Now I am wondering what they will think of next. We always think metal is better, but all the new technology is plastic.

which one is it now stihltech? is it plastic or is it metal?

The 270 looks like it weighs in at almost 12 lbs . It has the same HP rateing as the 026. Why in the hell would anyone buy one of these things when the 026 is lighter, doesnt have a complicated design(ala 029) and has the same power. Stihl dropped the ball again.

Why replace the 026 anyways? Its light powerful and durable. The only reason to replace it now would be because of emissions.

The only reason to build a 280 IMO would be to replace the 029 (which they wont because they sell a lot of them) or to fill the gap between the 026 and 036.

Huskyman, You might be on to something. Maybe stihl is going to replace the 029 with the 028. The 029 has a rep for being crap(it may or may not be) so it would be smart for stihl to replace it with a model that has had a great reputation in the past(028).

A friend of mine recently went to a tech seminar sponsored by Stihl. It was held at the area Stihl distributor and he saw pallets of 029's and 039's stacked to the warehouse ceiling. It was discussed that Stihl sells (pushes) lots of 029's and 039's because of emissions averaging requirements. By selling lots of low-emissions 029's, they can sell more higher-emissions Pro saws.

There is not a ounce of truth to that. There is no emmisions differance between a pro and a non pro model given engines are the same size. If you put a catalyst on the non pro models there would be a differance , but stihl has not done this yet in the us.

metal

The bottom end IS metal. Doesn't look near as complicated as an 029, but I never found it complicated either. Like I said, the factory dude said it was a replacement for the 028.
Figures Germany would be selling it already. You guys up north will probably see it before me. We seem to get things slow up here.
Which is it, pro or consumer? a 270 should be a consumer saw, but a 280 should be pro. I think the line is blurring. Wait and see when I get it in my hands.

I would bet the 280 is based on the 170 just like the 029/039. The 270 is clearly a non pro saw. It is porky and has no more power than the 026. The 028 may have more power, but surely not more than a 036. I cant see the use for these saws unless they are to replace the 029/039. If it is to replace the 026 Stihl has blundered big time.

Well this seems to be a hot topic. As we can all see the 270 is out in Germany. It is also here in the US. As I posted earlier I ran one of them in late September. The factory rep said it was a homeowner saw but with great anti-vibe features. The 280 will replace the 260 but not for some time because Stihl has too much money invested in tooling for the 260. I can assure you this is reality. As i said the 270 is in the US and i cannot believe your local dealer does not have them yet. The 280 will be out in later. As for the future of the 029 I have no idea. I highly doubt either the 270 or 280 will replace it. the 270 I believe is smaller and the 280 is a pro model.

I just cant believe Stihl would discontinue their best selling model (029) already. Even though many of us dont like it, the saw is a money maker. And the less ole Andy has to do with the company, the more the accountants take over

If the 270 and 280 are based on the same chassis as stihltech suggests how can one be a prosaw and the other a consumer? I dont think the 028 will replace the 026 because it will be bigger cc wise. I think it will be a conmsumer model.

Hi ricksvar, that is interesting although I don`t know how well it will carry over to chainsaws. Not saying it won`t, saying I simply don`t know. Shindaiwa actually came out with a 4 cycle trimmer burning premix before Stihl did and I`m told that everyone has an engine of this type in the works. I`m sure it looks good from the standpoint of meeting EPA and other governing body regs since two strokes are reputed to discharge up to 30% of the fuel mix out the exhaust unburned. Russ

:confused:Well I still do not know what to think about the 270/280, I like 90% of you am a little confused, if the saw is magnesium maybe they are trying to come out with better semi pro/consumer models kinda like husky has with the 55r, it is metal but is not considered a pro saw, I could be way off but it is just another thought to throw in the mix. I will be very interested to hear from somebody who has run one of these saws and can give a good report. I personally do not think they are going to replace the 026 anytime soon, if they do it better be a real good saw or they will fall on their face, if they replace the 029/290 it will not brake my heart especially if it is a metal saw that will compete with the 55r.
