3/8"/.325- where's the cut-off?

I think that such rules are involved quite often when people go with the 3/8" on smaller saws.......:greenchainsaw:

3/8"x7 are quite a bit larger than .325x7, and "robs" a good bit of torque, in comparison.....

Been thinking about this, SawTroll. Ultra could be onto something. How about some .404 on the old Homie 150, then I could add a couple of pounds of lead in the case to make it seem more "substantial". Just have to work out the bar issue....hmmm:hmm3grin2orange:

IMO .325" is best choice for saws in 50cc class... Nothing to be gained by using 3/8"

well there is something to be gained, chip clearance.

I have a different way of resolving the issue. just mod all of your saws:hmm3grin2orange:

Well, chip clearance is hardly and issue with 13" bar :hmm3grin2orange:

I run Stihl RS .325 on my muff moded MS260 Pro with an 8 tooth sprocket and a 16" bar. This is my limb saw and I like the .325 set up because it doesn't "grab" like the 3/8 on the smaller stuff. Not sure if the 3/8 would be faster (I've never tried it) but the .325/8 pin setup burned through a 14 1/2" dry pine in 4.17 sec. (average of 3 cuts). That’s plenty fast for a limb saw and like I said the .325 doesn't try to throw the saw at you (as bad anyway) when you catch the tip on a 2" branch like the 3/8 does. Just my.02 on the whole thing.

As a side note for what it's worth my father and I were cutting together this summer on some tulip poplar. He was running the 038 AVS w/ 3/8 and a 20" bar and I had the above mentioned MS260. In a race on a 16" log the 260 came out the bottom first. But then again the 038 was handicapped as it was running Stihl RM chain and I'm sure my dad put it in the dirt once or twice.

There is something to be said for going with one size chain for all your saws it makes thing alot easier, it might not be the most effective use or the fastest cutting but there are always trade offs.

I run 3/8 on my 455 a 55 cc saw with no issues, never tried .325 on it. Mai reason it takes the saw chain as my 575 so I can buy a roll of chai and make my one loop plus with a 20 inch bar they can use the same loops with is nice too.

3/8 has better chip clearance and cuts faster IMO than .325 now if I could just get my eager beaver to take 3/8 I would be all set:hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange:

I'd have to bet your dad's chain wasn't what it could have been, for you to beat him. An 038Super should handily beat an 026, given equal chains. If you had tried it with freshly sharpened RS on both saws, you would likely have seen a different outcome.

The 038 is mine also so I know what both saws are capable of, and you are right with a fresh RS the 038 would have won. That’s why I pointed out the chain difference, I was just trying to give some idea as to the capabilities of the 260 / 8 pin / .325 set up. Like I said this is my limb saw, if I really wanted to race to win I would have used my MS460 which will hands down destroy the stock 038 but this race was to see how close the 260 would come, I was as surprised as anybody when the 260 won.
