I was reading computeruser's plan for 3 saws. Sounds like a plan to get rid of extra cash ha. Also sounds like fun. So I have a 357xp. What 2 do I need to finish the plan?
Thanks
Doesn't seem to be any Dolmar dealers around so I guess don't include them (darn).

Assuming you're a Husqvarna guy and wanted to stick with that brand, a 339 and 390 would probably round the mix out pretty well.

If you were a Stihl guy who wanted to keep the 357xp or replace it with an MS361, the big-bucks setup would be MS200 and MS660. The more conservative pairing would be MS180 and MS460+DP muffler cover. The middle saw in the lineup would probably be an MS260Pro if we stuck firmly to the 30-40cc/50cc/70cc+ idea, but since the MS361 isn't much heavier than the MS260 so it will work pretty well as the middle saw, too.

The best setup that most closely approaches the ideal 3-saw plan would probably be from Dolmar - 401, 5100s, 7900. This would also be the most cost-effective pairing for the guy who doesn't already have other saws hanging around.

For the longest time I was quite happy meeting all my real saw needs with a 7900, 026Pro, and an Echo 3400. But we all know how Arboristsite rapidly wears your will and self-control away...now look at my signature line. Oh well.

You're right - any way you look at it, it's bye, bye, cash!

Depends if you are satisfied with your Husky dealer (or if they also sell Stihl)

If I had to pick two more Husky's for you, -and without a clue as to what your budget is, or what you need these saws for...

Little saw(s) 346XP or 339XP rear handle (frugal option 340 or 345)

Bigger saw(s) 372XP or larger... if you don't need a 385-390-395, it's just extra cash, weight & fuel consumption... if you do need a very large saw, skip past the 372 & go big.

For Stihl:

Little saw(s) MS 260 Pro or MS192/200 rear handle (frugal option MS 250)

Bigger saw(s) MS 440/460 (maybe a 441/461 if they feel good to you), or MS 660... same reasoning as above.

I'm working on getting 3 or 4 of each brand... and will cull later:

Dolmar PS 401, 5100s, 7900

Husky 41, 346XP, 371XP (maybe get a 'new' 372 just to stash back)

Stihl MS192rh, 361, 461 (when avail) and 660 (maybe get a new 440 like the new 372...collectors items someday)

Edit: What computeruser said...

What budget? Seriously though I would only buy pro models. Their use would be limited but I usually only buy the best tools. Another bad habit.
Husky or Stihl are fine but the Husky dealer is very fine.

The 357xp, a 372xp, and a 395xp.

I would say it depends on how big a range you have to cover;

Assuming you keep the 357xp, the "small range" could be 346xp, 357xp and 372xp, and a wider range 339xp, 357xp and 390/395xp.....:D :D

...if you stick to Husky, that is.

I looked a little more at HP, 3+ 4+ then I jumped to 6+

I bailed on the 441 for the 460, not really regretting it. I figure my big saw needs to be big, because I really don't use it that much, but when I need a big stick I need the big stick!

Now Im thinking I need to massage my 353 over to pull a 20" bar, so it can cover for the 361 if it dies out cutting wood. It wouldn't be a true replacement, but probably well enough to get the truck loaded.

I also thought about another 4+HP saw to back up my 361, since its the most heavily used saw...

I like my combo :) dolmar 401 with a 14" bar Dolmar 5100s with an 18" and a dolmar 7900 with a 20" and 24" bar...All 3 saws where under 1200 bux...

You should consider sending your 353 to Ed Heard (EHP) - he is known to make "miracles" to them.............;)

moecoors, sense you're going to keep your 357XP, which is a GREAT idea! Plus you like your Husky dealer, how's this look to you-

353/346XP with a 16" b&c.
357XP with a 18" b&c.
372XP with a 20" and 24" b&c.

Here's my three saw plan-

Stihl 021 with a 14" b&c.
353/346XP with a 16" b&c. Still got to get one of these!
365 with a 20" b&c.

Can't believe none of you guys called them out. The 346XP and 385XP would be perfect companions to your 357XP.

that looks like a good plan, unless the 372 isn't big enough for you.

my 3 saw plan - 136 a good little saw, but really not good enough for more then occasional use, 359 after it was opened up & operated on is close to my 371xp - 20" & 28" bar, may need something to pull the bigger bar better

I would like to run my 7900 against a 385xp....either way i guess the 7900 is still like 2 lbs lighter....

Here's a three saw plan for carving.......
