:dizzy: :dizzy: Ok I snagged a 359 Husky at a yard sale for $65 with no chain and bar. I cleaned it up and put fresh gas in it and it kicked a few times but couldn't keep it running long enough to make a carb adjustment. I then ordered a carb kit from Baily's and after pulling apart the carb and blowing out all the small holes including pulling out the Hi Lo adjusters and blowing out the ports i reassembled it back together and prepared for another run. With a new chain and bar installed I got it to run but not very smooth and would stall after a minute or two. I then pulled the carb back off to double check my work and also check the fuel line for a leak or crack. The only thing I found was the filter was shot so I installed a used one from another saw. Again I tried to find a sweet spot with the HI LO screws but it still would stall and run a little ruff if I could keep it running for a few moments. If you guys have any ideas that may help I sure would appreciate it. The only thing I haven't done is change the plug.

Well once I get it running to the point where I can hold the throttle open for a test run into some wood the rpms surge a bit ,never steady and then it just dies.

I am not sure what I am looking for and also are you saying to remove the cylinder or just look through the intake with the carb removed. I have never gone as far as removing the jug . Also after the carb is removed there is a small plastic manifold which I have yet figured out how to remove.

Pull the muffler,,,,

much easier,,,besides most cylinder scoring is usually found on the exhaust side anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!! pressure test the fuel line and carb by remiving filter then apply about 15-20 psi it should hold it indefinitley,,,let us know what u find

even easier

just pull the spark plug and look on the exhaust side for noticeable streaks.

I think you have an air leak and your piston is fine.

good luck

Ok guys I will do all the things you have mentioned and then some. It may be a few more days before I get to it again, I have other priorities (military paper work) to take care of first.I am also going to replace the fuel line and spark plug just to eliminate those two problems. To me it seems like fuel and air problem but I have been proven wrong a few times so I will do all the checks and post my results. Thanks for all your input and anything else you may come up with.

OK guys I managed to break away from the paper work so I went to the work bench to just give a better look at the carb, manifold, and this so called "impulse Line". With a metal probe I very slightly lifted up on the rubber impulse hose to look for cracks and much to my surprise it wasn't even connected to the manifold and was also split at the very end. I do believe this is the problem and it will be corrected asap . I did blow back on the carb ( fit my big mouth over it) and it seem to hold pressure. I also pulled the plug and took a look at the exhaust side of the cylinder wall and the only thing I saw was very slight scratch lines going around the cylinder not up and down, are these cross hatch marks from factory honing ? Anyway it looks like all you guys were on the right track and I thank you all for your input. I will let you know how it runs when I get it corrected.

Just got through with my own 359. If yours has the epa carb, find another my carb was the problem!! I just installed a newer carb and boy does she run now!! If your piston isn't scored or the cylinder as well than its either the crank seals ( have it pressure tested. ) or its THE CARB. My own frustrating experience has been on for about two months until i found a used carb on fleabay. Just installed it tonight & "WOW," she runs great. The trick is not to give up or give in to the machine.

I took the saw to work today because I knew work was going to be slow ( aircraft work) and be board out of our mind . I pulled out the small impulse line and it was in bad shape which we could see from the pics. The bad thing was I forgot to take a roll of new fuel line so I scabbed a good fuel line off a blown weed wacker we were working on and installed it. I then set the Hi Lo adjustments at one turn out and bingo, it fired right up and purred like a mean cat, lol. I let it warm up then set the Lo screwto the high RPM and had to back off the idle a bit. Then to the Hi screw, it didn't take much, maybe a 1/4 turn and she peeked out at high rpms and then I back it off an 1/8 and man it was running good. Then all of a sudden it started to surge , rpms dropped and then nothing, wouldn't even start again. I pulled off the cover and after looking a minute noticed the impulse line had blown off, WHAT THE H@ll !!!!. I put the line back on and it fired right back up and ran great and the impulse line stayed on through several high speed runs, Wahoo, I have me one heck of a saw. Still need to sink it into some wood and put a load on it for the final test. Thanks again guys !!!:blob2:

Doc, Thanks for posting the info on that carb, it is a Walbro 199 HDA and if I continue to have problems with the carb I will think about getting a better carb set up. Let me know what model you installed on your saw. Good luck with it.

Hi.

The carb that was there was an HDA 199, i swapped it with a HDA 159 carb and "man," she purrs now. Usually i repair and sell but i've grown attached to this one. Maybe its all the grey-matter i've spent on it going from this site to the saw. The pics of my 359 are attached. The washing machine is my temporary work bench "SHhhhhhhhhh," don't tell da missus.

I don't see an "impulse line" in my parts manual. What does Husky call it and where does it come from and go to?

Husky has them integrated with the intake manifold. So there is no hose.

Doc, thanks for the info and model of your replacement carb, I wrote the carb number down so if i run into problems I will sure think about getting one of those 159. Nice work bench !!.
