I know when I worked at the saw shop back in the late 80s-98 almost all new huskys we sold the head mechanic /owner would punch holes in the mufflers

I know for sure the 257 and 36 he punched holes . I got my brother in law a 257 in around 96 and he punched holes in it because my sister still has that saw .

Had a 359 once. A couple injuries to it and it seemed like more cost than it was worth to fix it. I wound up giving it to someone who said he might have the parts to fix it. He looked like someone who would appreciate it. I hope it worked out well.
If I had known as much about saws as I do now, I probably would have tried fixing it. If he got it going, I'm happy.
Yeah, I know what you mean. I had to rebuild mine and I now have a total of $21 in the thing.

A coworker asked me to fix up his dads 359 that had been out of service for a few years. Fuel lines, filters, new clutch spring and a vent hole drilled into the carb cover and I was impressed. Starts immediately, idles without missing a beat, cuts fast and amazing balance and AV. It was difficult giving it back, but I couldn't convince the bastard to sell it to me

Your saw got a green fuel cap?
Simple cheap after market replacements are usually more open than factory items.
I just drilled a couple of holes in the front of mine, under the support brace and fitted some mesh in there to satisfy the spark arrestor police. Mirror the holes in the support brace and you have a simple cheap no tools other than a drill and maybe a file- muffler mod.

Nope- mean is is a bit more eco friendly and you know what that means...... restricted!
Has the E-Cat muffler.
Mine was really eco friendly this morning, it wouldn't start. After I wallowed around with it for a while I finally got it going but it was so lean it died several times. I'm getting ready to order a new Zama for it and perhaps look for a non-epa muffler...mine's kinda beat up anyway. I checked the tank vent and fuel line, they're okay, don't know about the pulse hose but I know the old Walbro has fairly stiff diaphragms in it. I drilled a hole in the top cover to no effect..

By the way, how can you tell the cat muffler from the non-cat? I looked inside my muffler and didn't see the metal coil in there like most have. It was fairly empty except for a couple of pipes and a plate with a bunch of holes up toward the front.
