hi russ,
heres a photo of my 394 art martin and I were using along with a 288 husky to test 3 of his racing chain, one of which he sent to john lambert. the best cut with the 288 was a 1.2 second cut . the best with the 394 with a muffler was a .7 second cut and to illustrate the different time with a stock chain my 3120 cut 1.06 . the 8 inch cant is in the background

Hi Ken, you would be the envy of McDonalds with all those curly fries! Your picture is beautiful, but I have my eye on the timber in the background. I would love to cruise it for sure. Those pieces of fuelwood are to good to burn and should have handles attached to them. Please go to the nth degree on the 346 cause I need to show Robert what a real saw means as in stock appearing, and as I mentioned to Uncle Art, I wont dump no timber with it. I got my 8x8's today and dove into one with a Johnny Walker Special.
A special thanks to all you hotsaw men, you to Dennis.

Hello wolf river mike,
I know that pile of chips look impressive but i must confess those were made cutting 8 inch cants with the grain. you can see the stack of cants in the background.the digger pine we cut length ways throws 8-10 inch stringers or chips but i did have a very sharp square filed chisel chain on.
Dennis, I do have 2 more saws i will bring that should do pretty well at clearwater. I've got uncle art working on some more art martin (martinizing) race chain
hello otto, hopefully you will get that little husky from dennis tomarrow so you can get off that beer and valium and make your own pile of chips.
hi chris, what type of saw are you having modified?

8 by 8 cants

hello john,
cutting those 8 by 8 cants will take a little getting use to for me , especially three cuts. also the timing of the cut.
Art called a few days and when i told him i had some 8 inch cants he wanted to know where i got them . anyway its a two hour drive up here but he was here in one hour and forty five minutes. seems he had some had some more chain to test that he was going to send to you. they cut pretty fast.Theres one you will especially will like. See from the photo you've playing with the 8 inch cants. what kind of times did you get?

I do most of may chain testing at Ken's place or Mike's place since I live in the city and have no access to logs. I decided to drive to Kens since he had made some fresh 8x8 cants and they were knot free where he made the cuts. Ken really attacks the wood aggressively and knows how to handle a saw, he gets the most out of them. He's a real pro. His cuts were so fast that it looked like he was cutting cheese.

Hi Ken, that`s a beautiful saw, especially the HUSKY orange. So can I expect my 372 to make a .7 second cut when I get it back?LOL. I haven`t checked to see where it is, but you ought to see it soon. Those 8x8 poplar cants, are they typically fresh cut for competition, or doesn`t anybody pay any particular attention? Man I love this site, especially when the pros are postin`. Russ

Ken, what kind of time can I expect with the 3120 when you get done with it? I'm really impressed with the times you are getting with the 394. I figure with your numbers on the 394 with 3 cuts and a dead start........ .5 to start and get to wood, .7 per cut (3x = 2.1) and 2 change overs .15 = .3 so that = .5+ 2.1+ .3 = 2.9 sec. and you would be no less than top 5 here.

Our NYS Woodsman meeting is in march and the guys will be talking to find out who has the best saw..... I can't wait till the first show to see.

Hopefully some day I will be able to come out west and see your toy chest.

Hi Chris,
got the 3120 almost to the testing stage. boy, .5 to the wood is a lot faster than i can do. My buddies that go out to your territory to compete practice that part for hours so they can keep up with you guys. I did cut with art martin testing chain and got a .9 second cut with my 3120 but was running a stock 28 inch chain and had changed the sprocket from a 10 pin to a 8 pin sprocket and didnt have the necessary chain speed. Art martin brought a 655 bp he has built and made a 1.04 second cut with a 32 inch with his martinized chain on the same 8 inch cant
huskyman, yes they talk a lot about those stihls but they know the husky's can be made to run faster
ken

I'll still stick to my guns on this comment. Huskies are made for racing and stihls are made for workin,
I get better prices on my stihls here, but if I go 2 hrs away its just the oppisite, the huskies are way cheeper.
Ken, I asked the local guy about the differences between how alot of the chains here have the cutters forward and yours are back. he said with the testing he has done he could get better times with the forward set up in 12inch and under wood, but as soon as you went to 18 or bigger the cutter needed to go back like you have shown me. I'm going to make a chain both ways and run them and let you know how I make out.:D

Just curious Ken but are you saying the East Coast NY boys are faster to the cut then the West Coast boys? Why is that? And do they mostly cut small wood out East (8-12") as opposed to bigger wood out West?

East vs west

Hello huskyman,
We only have one contest that i know of out here that is a cold start. thats where they have you have your hands on the log. they say go and time you from when they say go. you have to go to the ground, start your saw, go to the log , and make three cuts. out here we do a hot start, you have your saw running and they time you from the point your saw touches the log. It takes a lot of practice to get real proficient at it but it sounds like chris has got it down. we do cut a lot larger logs but it is usually only 1 cut in a 30-32 inch log the top guys are high sixes to low sevens

Ken's right in that I half to practice a lot for the starts. If you check out the woodtick group pics you can see the 1-41 mac saw I practice with. Its heaver than most saws and thats without the bar. When I practice I half to be able to hit the log with the saw fast as possible. what some guys do is acctualy tweek the high idle lock and tape the handle. So when the saw hits the wood its wide open and their right hand can catch up to the saw after the start. You can see these starts need to be practiced for hours to be proficiant. My best time to the wood with the saw on a live start is .3 sec. and I started with my hands on the wood. My best dead start is .42 with a hopped up 029 I ran of a friends.

OOps ,new guy with photos here, this is my wedding day, and the jacket i'm wearing is a Athletic fit 56 inch short short. meaning I'm really wide with short arms, and I still could not tost with the jacket on, because of how tight it was in the shoulders and upper arms. And yes check out that catch I have, you see what a girl will do for an 026 pro with a ring on top!
Later,
Chris
