Hi arborists
I bought a used 500i recently and I’m happy with it- it starts right up every time on the first to third pull. However the decompression valve has been pushed in since I got it, and it’s never popped up. Can anyone shed some light on why that may be happening and what that could cause? Thanks

How can you tell it's always pushed in? If you don't use it buy a plug and eliminate it, if you do use it unscrew it, clean the end, and see if that helps. If it doesn't help, buy a new OEM, NOT CHINESE one. As for not popping up, some crud in the seat or just not enough compression will do that. The saw would probably run funny if the decomp is always in, though.

I think it’s always pushed in because I can’t push it down or up by hand. I’m not sure if I use it or if it’s always just stuck open. Wouldn’t it cause issues if that were the case? Thanks for your thoughts

Out of the box, my 500i decompression valve would stick open. At least one other on this forum reported the same issue. I would have to manually pull it closed. After several seasons of use, the valve now rarely sticks open. I do not know the cause, but would suspect too tight tolerances or bad machining.

Unlike my old MACs, my 500i doesn't run well with the valve open. I suspect your is stuck closed.

If it is definitely stuck and won't pop back up it may be faulty and should be removed and a plug put it or replaced with a new one. Maybe unlikely but i have heard horror stories of decomp valves failing and dropping bits of metal into the cylinder and wrecking the saw.

I plugged mine as it was leaking . Now I can hang the saw by the pull cord and it won't drop at all with the bar on . Monster compression
