If I go 395xp,I figure a 24''bar for everyday use,and I have a 36''for the larger log and stump duties with the large bar pad mount for my7900 anyway.Any suggestions for chain?I am partial to Stihl chain,RS mostly,as I have had great luck with it.

I got a deal on a roll of Windsor 50APL a while back, and it works just as good as anything I've ever used.I am not a fan of Stihl chail,my favorite is Oregon 72LG

Im open to other ideas for sure on chain,Ive found that stihl chain is harder and holds up better in clean wood.Ive found oregon chain to be somewhat softer IMO.I ve got a loop of windsor for my 36''bar and a 20''loop for my 7900 and It is definetly good enough for my ""hobby ''cutting.

Knock on wood, the only thing that I've replaced on my 395 is a couple of outer bar plates over about 5 or 6 years. I cut alot of noodles with it, and sometimes when they pack up around the chain catcher area they bend that little plate enough to break it. No biggie, but true to my style I always carry a spare plate.

Would never happen crosscutting as the small chips would clear fine.

Love running that saw.

I have found that the Windsor chain is just as hard as the Stihl chain, but the design is basically a clone of the Oregon 72LG.I personally don't like harder chain because it wears out files faster, and takes longer to sharpen.Believe it or not,I get just as much life out of the Oregon as I do the Windsor....Maybe I'm the only one,but in my experience with Stihl chain on bars over 28 inches, after the chain is about half worn down,it starts cutting so crooked that the saw will bind up in the cut.Mind you I have tried everything including a depth gauge on the drags, and a file guide to file at the exact angle on every tooth.I have not had this problem with any other chain

i run the stihl 33rsc chain.i love it.

a 395xp with a 24" bar should be illegal. you'll have a better high than any meth junkie.

395xp Bar

Personally I find a 395xp just loves a 22" bar - .404 chain to save stretching and just lean into it - meth junkie on high octane.
Also have the 36" bar for the big jobs - but that is just hard work to use.
The balance on the 22" bar is about perfect and plenty of power to use it properly.

Hey can you use .404 on the 395?I read the catalog and it didnt show that for the 395.I would like to run that for sure, mostly ,cause "i could''I think im going to place the order today,Ill let you know.:greenchainsaw:

The big XP is on the way! I went with a 24''Bar with 3/8 Husky chain 7 pin sprocket, could have it by this weekend,if not next Tuesday.Let the chips fly!!

Congrats....You'll really enjoy that saw.I've ran about 10 tanks of gas through mine,it usually takes a Stihl 15 to 20 tanks to get broken in,so I guess it will take the same on the "beast",and it seems to be cutting better and better every day.I haven't even started the other one yet.I'm not going to either until I have to do some stumping.Let us know when you get it,and what you think

I belive you will want an 8-pin pretty soon, my 372 is only going to wear the 7-pin until it is run in, with the 20" bar........:greenchainsaw:

Kinda off topic but is there much difference between the 394 and 395, HP rating is the same I think. I have a 394xp with 33" bar and love every bit of it. Was thinking of trying it with a 20" bar I have, should be interesting.

If the 066/660 can't run with a 395, what Stihl can? Other than a 088/880. Does the 088/880 have anything on the 3120?

I don't know about the 880 vs.3120.The 660 is no slouch by any means and it will run with the 395,but in my experiences so far the 395 does hold an edge....This may start a racket, but concerning which stihl's can run with husky's...I have felt like the 372 and the MS440 were too close to call, and I have never ran a 046/460 beside a 372.Between the 385XP and the new MS650,I feel like my 650 will out cut either of my 385's.

Put an older style non rev limiting coil on it and you may change your mind. The biggest problem I see with the 385 and 390 is the coil. once you get rid of those new coils they are a sweat heart of a saw although a little over weight. Then again true love looks past the jelly roll.;)

How does the rev limiting coil affect performance with the saw in a cut in decent sized wood? I can understand the tuning issues it can introduce, but figured once in wood it would not longer be a performance issue.
