7 or 8 tooth sprocket

I am running a 7 pin sprocket on my EHP359. Set up this way the saw is real strong. When I put an 8 pin it things changed. The saw lost a little of its great torque.

I am running a 9 pin sprocket on my Solo 694 (muffler modded only). Set up this way the saw is very sensitive to opeator input. Leaned on too hard and it will stall. Chain speed is good though if the chain is right and the operator is light on the touch.

Swapping sprockets is a cheap and easy experiment.

Even my relatively small MS361 (stock Eu version) cuts faster with 8 pin than with 7 in my wood.
That is with a 15" bar, the wood is mostly birch.

Thats known thing. Higher speed, smoother cuts, but exponentially faster to get dull and the wearing of combo sprocket-bar-chain. In around 70-s Solo experimented with this and pushed chain speed around 30-35 m/s on some saws, but all the stuff weared so quickly compared to ordinary setup that it renounced from such chainspeeds.

Picked up the 8 tooth today and my 460 with a 20" liked it! Tomorrow I'll do some timed cuts in some 16" pine and let you know how the 8 compares to the 7.

Ted, expect it to be faster by 10%-15%. With only a tiny 20" bar on that saw, you got gobs of extra power to pull the bigger sprocket. I'm using an 8 pin on my modified 372's with 24" bars and they are faster than the 7 pin.

Okay, in 16" fresh pine, the 5 run average: 8t, 6.46 seconds
7t, 6.76 seconds

With the 7t, I could be more lazy and still get good cuts. To gain the advantage with the 8t, I had to "listen" to the saw. The saw wouldn't bog with the 8t, however if I didn't keep the RPMs up, there wouldn't be an advantage. For racing, I could really see how the 8 would be faster, but for a long day in the woods I think I would go with the 7. I guess my stock 460 mag is a torque monster and likes to be driven like one.:blob2:

I have a simple question on my old Homelite XL1. I need a new sprocket. Mine currently has a 7 tooth but all I see are 6 and 8 tooth sprockets. Anyone know which would be better. Its a 42cc saw with a 16" bar.

thanks
