Right I've got a belter of a spark.
First off I disconnected the shorting wire off the coil and viola a spark so I completely removed the black donut thing under the flywheel as it was already not in circuit then remade all the wires I'd cut and swapped while testing.

The coil it set a business cards width from the flywheel and yeah, a very strong spark. After a few hours of nothing I wasn't expecting a zap! It got me a few times before I let go an then did it again a few minutes later off a screw driver!

It's quite bright just flinging the flywheel by hand.
So just the anti-crud grommet that covers the carb screws left to arrive and I'll put the carb on and put some fuel in it.

I don't like to give up and I don't like to be beaten expecially by mechanical items that aren't rocket science. I will say 2 strokes are not my strongest subject but I wasn't given in now I'm a few quid in.

It's much bigger than the 021 and I'm looking forward to hearing it running, it will be borrowing the 20" bar from the 660 for its first outing.

Exactly what I mentioned earlier- spending money on parts for a saw that isnt going to fire.
There was (not sure if still is) a chip available from Stihl that mounts above the coil and will replace the module under the flywheel- similar to a Nova chip, will have to consult some service manuals to find out the part number.
I hear ya bud, I just thought "eventually" its got to fire... might cost a few quid but as the saw was free I'd set a limit of £100 to spend as they go for that not working on ebay.

I looking for it to take the jobs I do with the 660 ,it's just to big really for what I need. I only really bought it to do one big job on a fallen eucalyptus tree then it will be excess to my needs. The 038 should should slot nicely in the middle and not be as heavy.

Ah, yes, but by the sounds you had spark- you just had not found it yet. :p

I've fitted part 4 (the clamp) but part 2 and part 3 are still quite floppy.
028 had a spacer behind the adjuster. Not sure if the 038 uses it.

Looks like I'm going to have to make one.
Edit - 5 minutes later

The handle from an old reach toothbrush fits well enough to call that a quick fix. Now the adjustment screw isn't sloppy and the locating post is free to move up and down the thread without binding.

I that is a generator for heated handles, 1118 400 4000. Don't chuck it out. Do you have heated handle parts too?
There was a gap where the switch should be but the handle looks normal without any electrical connections. I've seen other saws with a grommet covering the switch hole.

I think that part is for side tensioners.

I like You fabricating one from a toothbrush. Should be hollowed to fit tensioner screw

I've fitted that little black saddle into the gap to hold the screw shaft, then I refited the inner side cover and all works perfect, just like new!.

Also when it's running I'm going to refit that coil and measure the output, if it's enough amps I might fit a USB to power my heated vest.

I couldn't wait any longer.. the suspence was killing me.
A squirt of gt85 down the inlet and off she popped first pull.
Sounded really good 👍.

I'm still waiting on the carb adjuster grommet before I put it back on and complete the saw. So chuffed it fired right up.

It's missing its Felling dogs, I definitely want to put some on if anyone this side of the pond has any laying around.
Thanks

Is there a felling dog thread with what number fits what?

Did someone hot send you an IPL?
Part numbers will be in there.
"Standard" spikes are # 1128 664 0500

Hi Bob
Yeah they did but as an old saw it comes back as other saw names sometimes not even mentioning the nearly forgotten 038.

These apparently share the same spike.
MSE220, MSE220C, MS440, 029, 039, 038, MS360, 036, MS441, MS441C, 034, E20, E220, MS460, 046, MS381, MS380, MS290, MS310, MS390, 044

The grommet arrived, I put it all together and it's really rich and puking fuel out of the exhaust. I got it to run and tick over for a minute or so.

Looks like the top gasket in the bottom "sandwich" on the bottom of the tilletson carb is also leaking. I'll fix the leak then learn about tuning I suppose.

When it ran it revved a bit slow but did rev. Had enough pulling for one day, hopefully it doesn't end up in the back of the shed.

All sorted, the needle valve wasn't seating causing it to leak. I stripped the carb again and this time pinged out the pin out of the rubber retaining posts and lost the spring. 20 minutes later I found the spring, cleane the seat with a cotton bud and reassembled the tillotson.

I used one of the new spare impulse pipes to put on the fuel input of the carb so I could blow to check the needle valve. It was all OK I also sucked the pipe and retained vacuum with my tongue. Quickly bunged it back and hey presto It coughed first pull.

I'd backed the idle screw out during testing so I went ½ turn in till I got a smooth idle. What a beast! Its got the same kind of rocking action as the 660 on a blip. I didn't expect it to have as much wellie. So all done with the 20" bar and I put the 30" on the 660.

While it was running I checked and was pleased to see a nice trickle of sticky bar oil flowing from the port, The bashed oil tank held the lube so another win.
Also the clutch side casing from the 660 lined up and fitted on the 038, didn't expect that. Fine tuning needed next.

Thanks for all the input and help with bring an old saw back from the dead. I'll update you all when I refit that heated handle coil and measure its current output, seems a shame not to use it for something.
