i would recommend the la sportiva's but i am returning the second pair because of stitching letting go with only a couple months of wearing them.

Was that holding sections of the upper together? This is my pet peeve with any fancy boot with a lot of different sections in the upper.

according to your diagram it was right at the heel collar area. and the rubber sides were wearing away from the sole. not real tough for almost 300 bones worth of shoe. thats for sure.

sucker and his money though i am going to return them and try a different pair for a couple dollars more. lol. wont wear them with spikes though. got a nice pair of golden retrievers for that. lesson learned.

I have a buddy in PA who swears by them as his gaff boots, the lhotse or some such jibberish, he has 3 different pair, the ice boots for all day in gaffs.

Are they not hot in summer?

For me, a thin boot or shoe of dark color in the sun is the only way I feel heat on my feet in the summer. Thicker insulated boots 'to me' actually feel cooler as they keep the heat from the sun shining on them away from the skin? Don't know how else to descrbe?

JPS, I have had some stiching wear out on the sides as well, but that is with every boot I've ever climbed much in. Are there some that don't?

i think the stitching on the la sportiva's were popping because of the straps on the gaffs. almost positive actually.

what i have noticed though is that the hikers are so much kinder to the bark than my redwings.

These are the REI Spirit II mountain hikers. The have a solid upper, and were my favorite boot till the came out with the Spirit III with a lot of plastic sewn in.

Notice that there very little stitching on the boot, and the upper is made from only a single piece of leather.

thanks alot fellow tree guys! the asolos are the ones i was trying to look for, just didn't know what they were called! now i just need to find the size i need!

Work boots...

Well..it has been a while since i've been on here..lol..thought I'd post a few..so, I think Wescos are great for wearing gaffs...but if you do alot of prunning Oakley has a good sturdy pair of hikers..also...and you can laugh. Wal-Mart..Herman survivors...are really comfotable hiking/work boot. Steeltoed and high ankle..i go through a $45.00 pair every 2 yrs if just prunning w/ them. Soft sole for grip on the limb and dont harm the bark or cambium layers.

these are the boots that i went with after returning the la sportiva's. got the 265$ on return and then paid 25$ more to step into these. not much stitching were i would grab for a footlock and the rubber seams are in a better spot than the la spotiva's.

havent worn them yet at work so i'll let you know after a days and i get them broken in a bit. by sight alone they look to be ok.

i'm thinking these have to last longer. have to. for 290 they better! lol

edit: i got them at REI in reading mass.

Nepal looks like his favorite boot for gaff work, I've not worked with him since I quit chasing storms regularly.

I'm sorry but that is an ugly boot. I would never get caught in a tree with those boots on my feet. They prolly cost over 300 clams too?
