Here is some more snag hunting on federal ground. These were all hazard trees along major haul routes. Some were left to lay, some were put in the creek for the fish, and some just might have made it to some little local mill that specializes in OG doug fir and POC.:)

They all had a natural favor to go straight across the road but we're lucky to have some guys quite handy with a set of jacks. Not to many guys left around who know how to cut fir measured in feet. The cutter in the pictures is in his late 50's and I have trouble keeping up with him at half his age.

What do you do when you have a snag on the top of a 15' cutbank leaning over the road with a butt too rotten to put a jack in? I think this one was around 175' tall.

You find someone with one of these. This is one of the few remaining line pulling trucks from the OG days. Just an old Skagit 2 drum yarder mounted on a truck. This guy does a ton of stream restoration around here placing whole trees rootwad and all in creeks for fish habitat. They ran line through a block on the adjacent hillside to pull the tree sidehill instead of launching it over the road.

The hardest part was climbing the tree to set the line. It took about an hour to get up 75' with all the loose bark.

Well that had merit

For two posts you're getting by.

Any chance you could do better on the photos?

Just kidding. Nice start. Very nice.

Very good cutting also.

Sometimes, the best way to take care of a snag is by using explosives. Nope, no pictures and I haven't seen it done. Just know a guy who decided it was the way to take snags down SAFELY and then got in trouble for proceeding.
