MS290 with 20" b+c goes for $369.95 around here plus tax. My friend bought one and was all proud of himself, till I told him I would have sold him a barley used MS361 for the same total price. HARRY HOMEOWNER LEARNS A LESSON!
and boy was he pizzed when I told him it had the same clam shell design of the poulan he was replacing. He thought he was getting more of the pro style saw and the dealer didn't tell him any different, but it is the crap dealer I have always talked about, not the 2 good ones in the area.

Just called the local Husky dealer and Stihl dealer. Both are full service dealers

350 18" Husky is 348.00 + tax .. walkin cash price

290 18" is 320.00 + tax ..walkin cash price

Tax is 5% here
.

Last time I checked they where over $400 with a 20" lam bar.
A husky 353 with metal cases/pro saw construction is $355. dealker doesnt sell 350's so I cant say.

400.00 for a 290 .. That dealer must be on drugs....Run as fast as you can for the door!!!!!!

The dealers I called are local to me and stock Home owner saws.. Figured good place to find out a price..

So, a couple of questions. Would you guys be satisfied as a customer with this verdict from the OEM? Do you think a rebuild this extensive is likely to be "as good as new" and last as long as it should? .

Here is my Joe Blow weekend warrior answer:

1. No, in no way at all. You would think that the manf. would want the entire saw back to diagnose potential issues if this is a newer model saw and an unlikely failure.

2. It would depend on the tech doing the work, but it should last nearly as long yes. The techs just don't have the facilities/tools to work with that the factory does.

Anyway, what I've decided to do is use "pre-assembled parts". I'm going to grab a new saw off the shelf and strip all of the covers, starter, muffler, handle and tank off of it and use the "short block" to repair the customers saw. I'll still get paid for the warranty job, plus the sale of all of those parts. It will more than pay for the donor saw; in fact I'll come out ahead in the long run. Plus I'll save a few hours not having to do the total rebuild.

Spike your a stand up man and I would be happy with that outcome.

I'm just wondering though, does the new short block have a new warranty or is it only good for the original period?

Hey Dodge;

Yeah, it's a newer model and they have indeed been diagnosing it for a while now. Supposedly this problem was fixed a ways back in the serial number run, which is obviously BS. I think that the original problem may have been improved, but not corrected. Seems that they have some more diagnosing to do.

As far as warranties go, most OEMs are going with the duration of the original warranty if they provide the replacement saw or engine. They don't reset the clock back to zero. At first this seems like they're being cheap, but they are honoring the original agreement; just not extending it. So, I think it's fair. Where it can get strange is you could toast a motor with 2 months to go on the original warranty and your warranty on the new motor will be 2 months.

If something is out of warranty and the customer buys a replacement motor, he gets the full warranty.

So spike, how many brands of saws do you sell? :D

Well Space, we got 3 brands of saws to choose from here. One is red and black, one is orange and black, and the other is just orange.

The saw in question is the monotone brand. The crank bearing problem on this model has been discussed at length here on AS. This is only the second failure I've seen out of quite a few saws, but obviously this problem has not been fully corrected, as we have been told.
