Adjusting carb on ms440 after muffler mod

I just got a new ms440 with 25" bar to add to the collection and have ordered the stihl dp muffler for $30 through my local dealer. I have quite a fair amount of experience adjusting carbs and rebuilding saws, but am just wondering what others have experienced as far as adjusting for the stihl muffler mod. It is brand new and i don't have a tach. I would like to know a ballpark number of turns backed out on high and low. I know each saw will be different and low should be fine, but i want to make sure i get the high speed right because i don't have a tach. thanks for any help.

Sorry, just messing with ya. Someone a heck of alot more knowledgeable then me may be able to tell you. I bought a tach after I screwed up my 346xp trying to adjust it without. My chainsaw addiction has increased much faster than my knowledge of how to work on them.... hoping that slow and steady will win the race:yoyo:

invest in a tac, thats to good of a saw to guess.
 
Yes, get a tach. To answer your quesition, it's 1 turn out WITHOUT the limiter caps in place. You may need to go another 1/8 out on the H with the dual port, maybe.

Do an AS search on limiter caps removal. Best way is to buy the cheap tool from your dealer, snip off the lock tab and put them back in. Then adjust as you see fit.
 
I am interested in either a muffler mod or just a better muffler for my Stihl. I've looked in the IPL and there are several different mufflers: Muffler Standard / Muffler AUS, NZ / Muffler USA, CDN. Which is the better (least restrictive) muffler to start with? Are all three mufflers available in the USA? Does anyone have a part number for the best muffler for a Stihl MS290? Would a muffler for an old 029 be better or would it be the same? Sorry for all the questions.
 
The numbers you see are for entire mufflers. You can't buy the rear portion alone. Sometimes the only difference is the inclusion of a particular screw in the kit, or a different shape deflector etc.

You can only get two versions of the 044/440 muffler here, and the differences are subtle (the diameter of the outlet hole in the rear section) and not worth worrying about. In any case, these are changes that you can do yourself, and if you have the dual port front cover, just slightly enlarge it's slot and don't worry about the rear section.

The 029.. just enlarge the holes beneath the deflector, and trim the deflector slightly. Of the various mufflers available (2) - I'm pretty sure it's only the shape of the deflector that changes, and on some foreign models, the lack of a spark arrester screw. The 029 muffler is also used on the 039, so be careful opening it up too much. You need to take the muffler off before drilling, and get all the metal out of it (can be a pain).
 
I modded my 046, and didn't have a tach at the time so I richened it up some and ran it. I then shut down and checked the plug 'till I thought it was right. I received my tach and checked it at about13000.
